I'd go Big 10 on these guys, jumbo package, max protect, power ball control to set up the play actions (if the o-line permits). Have them stack the box then hit them with a pass.

We ran the ball against them pretty well last year but that double eagle flex defense is always tough to run against because it has 8, sometimes 9, in the box and the alignments of the defenders are funky and make it difficult to block regardless of size. If I'm Ludwig I motion out Escobar and run 10 personel to create mismatches in the passing game and take defenders out of the box. Then, if numbers dictate it, run Kazee between the tackles or throw it if we get one on one match-ups. Considering that their 5'11" starting Rover would likely come out to cover Escobar, Gavin should have a field day. Also, use misdirection as that defense is predicated on the non-playside LB and flexed out defender pursuing with the flow. Weakside powers should work well, too. That defense was designed to stop the run - even though many will argue its roots in the CFL dispell that notion. But when you have eight or nine in the box versus standard 21 personel pro style offense and the base set calls for man coverage it is designed to stop the run. Ellerson ran it well when he directed desert swarm but that was 20 years ago when teams still ran it 55-60% of the time. Love this post. This kinda stuff helps me watch games better, and I played in high school. I like the other background info many provide as well. So thanks all you experts.

As I said last week mistakes and turnovers are key in early games. Last week eight assignment errors on dfense and two turnovers was the difference, Army was 3-9 last year they just do not have the horses to play with the big boys if the big boys are disciplined and prepared. The option is a two edge sword it is very hard to stop but also all that ball handling and pitching leads to turnovers and sometimes big losses. I have a hard time believing they can slow the offense down,Katz gives it another dimension. I think we will run right at them and control the ball. He who makes the fewest mistakes will prevail.

Army's record when opening on the road is less than impressive 3-21 in their last two dozen to be specific. There are a number of reasons to think we should win this game and not even one I can think of as to why we shouldn't.

I've got about 400 plus one. 400 is the approximate rushing yards they got on us last year, plus a 4-year starter in their option attack. It's amazing to watch an option QB who really knows how to run the offense. The Aztecs' D will need to be very, very assignment sound on Saturday. Even though the Aztecs should win on paper, the Army intangibles leave room for doubt.

However, if we're going to consider last year's game as an augury for this year's, it's also a fact they put the ball on the ground eight times yet it wasn't their season opener like this one is. As to the option, IIRC, SDSU has now won 8 of 12 against that offense.

We have much more depth at that position than we did last year - and that's one area where the Aztecs could have a decided advantage.

Rich Ellerson was the coach of Cal Poly that beat us twice at the "Q". Nuff said. Good thing Chuck Long is no longer our coach
