Dodgers, Red Sox near blockbuster Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles. Oh my. Adrian Gonzalez 12-16: $21M annually, 17-18:$21.5M annually Josh Beckett 12:$15.75M, 13:$15.75M, 14:$15.75M Carl Crawford 12:$19.5M, 13:$20M, 14:$20.25M, 15:$20.5M, 16:$20.75M, 17:$21M Nick Punto 12:$1.5M, 13:$1.5M That is 21+15.75+20+1.5 = $70.5 Million next year. What do the Red Rox get? $70.5 Million. That is plenty in return. They should easily be able to replace that production with that money. And James Loney and some young guys.
I am real glad the Padres are smarter than making a deal like this. $70.5 million can be used a lot more effectively.
Add in their other big money pickup - Hanley Ramirez at $15.5 next year. The Dodgers have added $86 Million in payroll for 2013.

Giants have got to hate this. First they lose Cabrera and then the Dodgers get AGon. That 3 game lead won't seem nearly as large to them after the trade.

Hmmm, makes you wonder. Baseball seems fishy these days. Also, do you think AG is or has been a pain in the ass?? I never got that, but who knows??

Boston is doing this to get a start fresh. They will have room in their budget to sign 3 of the best free agents on the market. $70 Million a year will get you some mighty fine players. Josh Hamilton to start.

86m is pocket change to hedge fund guy. Dodgers are upgrading by taking huge contracts instead of killing the farm system. What a difference from a year ago.
It's going to be awesome watching AG rake the Padres.

Of all the teams I would've hated to see AGon be a part of....

Still think Gonzo was worth paying the salary to keep him in a Padres uniform, this makes it so much worse wearing Dodger blue.

I doubt the Dodgers will make the playoffs even with these additions, plus I predict the Dodgers keep AGon no more than a couple seasons when they still can't make progress (make playoffs) despite their star roster

Yankees West...a lot of high priced players is NOT a guarantee of winning. If so, then Boston would not have traded these guys. Boston must see that what is available in F/A this winter is of greater worth than those they just traded. Plus, Boston did not do too bad on what they received in return outside of Loney or is it Looney (this guy is an enigma)?

Adrian is def. an improvement at 1st base for LA but he's not the player he was in SD. His HR numbers are down even though he has protection in the lineup and is out of Petco Park. This is from a Grantland article: But here's the thing: There's an excellent chance we've already seen the best of Adrian Gonzalez. His power has been off, to start. With 16 homers and just 34 games left until season's end, Gonzalez is on pace to produce his lowest home run total for any full season in his career, including his years toiling in the pitcher's haven of Petco Park. That might not be all of it. According to ESPN Stats & Info, of the 18 homers Gonzalez hit at Fenway Park since the start of the 2011 season, just six of those would have gone out at Dodger Stadium (11 of those 18 were hit into the shallow and inviting Green Monster seats in left field). www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8306109/financial-concern-window-comes-new-dodgers-regimeJonah Keri goes on to also drop questions about Crawford and Beckett's future productivity as well. That doesn't mean this was a bad decision, AGon could be revitalized being close to home again and back in the NL and Beckett will be helped by both being out of the AL East and into the more expansive Dodger Stadium but they could also be looking to dump these contracts in a year or two as well. It will be interesting to watch.

It will be interesting to watch. And that is just the physical aspect of AGon's difference. Mentally playing in Boston can be very draining. I could see him rebound and get close to where he was before. The AGon part of the trade could be a big plus. Crawford was a great player before Boston. Who knows if this move to LA will allow him to be great again. His style of hitting should be more valuable to LA than Boston. Crawford is more valuable to a team that plays in a big ball park. Overall, the move is LA's big free agent spending spree a little early - like Christmas in August.

The teams at the top of this list have reduced payroll via trades or have big contracts expiring. They have the most money to spend this off season assuming their payrolls will be similar to what they were in 2012. There will be a lot of money chasing few real game changers.
