Twitter Account Follow The Padres is a good way to get some interesting Padres info. It is the account of Corey Brock who is in his 6th year of covering the Padres for MLB.com. A recent tweet from him is interesting. Mike Ritter þ@mikeritter77 @followthepadres chances we see Headley and Gyorko in 2013 Opening Day Lineup? Follow The Padres þ@FollowThePadres Absolutely. Team happy with Gyorko's ability to play second. 3:16 PM - 14 Aug 12

I don't know much about the guy, but if the intelligentsia says he's got the goods, then he should start at second. All I know is they can't trade Headley now that he's finally good. We'd still need a SS and RF but filling only one with a legit guy would be a big help. As I showed in another thread, the Padres are getting above average production from right field. A Venable/Donorfia platoon has worked out well. Both are above average offensively compared the average RF production in MLB. The best minor leaguer the Padres have is a RF. They shouldn't make any moves there since he will be an outstanding RF in the near future.
SS? I agree. The Padres need a SS. If we could trade Headley for a new Kalil Green, I would pull that trigger in a second.
Gyorko should be a good hitter in the Majors. He should hit well above average 2B. Defense is the question. Will his extra hits on offense make up for the extra hits he gives up?

With all due respect to Corey, I think he's wrong on this one.

With all due respect to Corey, I think he's wrong on this one. Do you have any info on how the Padres view Gyorko's recent starts at 2B? I know many doubt he can field adequately there. I am a big fan of defense. If you have a choice between 2 second baseman who are equal in every aspect except: Player A: Hit 1 more home run every fortnight. Player B: Make 1 extra defensive out a week. They would be equal in value.

I am a big fan of defense. If you have a choice between 2 second baseman who are equal in every aspect except: Player A: Hit 1 more home run every fortnight. Player B: Make 1 extra defensive out a week. They would be equal in value. Defense is important but with all due respect you have taken the bait for so many years now that you don't even know that you're a fish. Cheapskate teams like the Padres always say that "speed and defense" are more important than real hitting. That's because those things cost less than real hitting. There aren't many ML position players who are flat-out butchers in the field. One extra hit a week taken away by a 2B is worth .050 points in batting average. If your statement is true, then it is also true that "there aren't many ML position players who are butchers" at the plate. Winners tend to have good defense. That is not a coincidence.
