Alex Rodriguez broke his hand last night, when he was hit by a pitch from Felix Hernandez in Seattle. The injury is expected to sideline Rodriguez for six to eight weeks, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). Not surprisingly, the news will affect the Yankees' summer shopping list. Here are the latest notes from the AL East... Yankees GM Brian Cashman said he’ll engage the market for a third baseman, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. The Yankees will consider all third base options, including Chase Headley of the Padres, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (on Twitter). It seems unlikely that the Yankees would meet the Padres' asking price for Headley, Heyman writes (on Twitter). www.mlbtraderumors.com

Hanley Ramirez of the Marlins. He is a young player (28) who was godly at 24, 25, and 26. He will, even with his current less than godly hitting, be a huge upgrade for the Dodgers at 3B. Giants can't be happy.
The Padres need to get some 2013 MLB ready players for Headley. Either a RF or a starting pitcher. The last thing the Padres need at this point is more depth in their minor leagues.

The Padres are drawing “huge” amounts of interest in third baseman Chase Headley, and there’s a “strong probability” of a trade, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. The Padres are "down the road" with several teams willing to part with high-end prospects for Headley, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (on Twitter).
The Yankees are unlikely to make a strong push for Headley, Heyman reports. Though they will consider third base options now that Alex Rodriguez is on the disabled list with a broken hand, they don’t want to surrender top prospects for Headley. The Yankees will ask the Padres about Headley, but haven’t done so yet, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (on Twitter).
Headley has a .268/.361/.423 batting line in 421 plate appearances for the Padres this year. He earns $3.48MM in 2012 and will remain under team control through 2014. GM Josh Byrnes has reportedly set a tremendously high asking price for Headley. The Orioles, Indians, Pirates, A's and others have checked in on the 28-year-old.

Report out this afternoon is saying that they probably won't trade for 3B. I didn't read it so I don't know if they couldn't find value or if ARods diagnosis is looking good.
They are in a hard place because they can't trade for a top 3B because ARod is coming back and won't be uprooted (at least not in the next 1-2 years). So they are looking for something disposable which lowers what they are willing to pay for him.

The Padres offered to trade Luke Gregerson for Daniel Murphy, but the Mets rejected the possible deal, John Harper of the New York Daily News reports. Gregerson, 28, has a 3.05 ERA with 9.5 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 44 1/3 innings this year. He earns $1.55MM and will remain under team control through 2014. www.mlbtraderumors.com

I wouldn't mind keeping Headley if they can't get a pretty good deal.

I say keep Headley until the off-season in order to get a MLB player. Hopefully, they can get a power hitting OF that hits from the left side or a switch hitter.

Jedd Gyorko will come up in a little while (Padres want to insure this year won't count in his control) and play 2B and rest Headley at 3B every 5 games or so. That little experiment will go a long way in determining how long Headley remains with the team. 1. How well does Gyorko hit? 2. How is his defense at 2B? 3. How is his defense at 3B? If 1 and 2 are good we keep Headley. If 1 and 3 are good but 2 is bad, probably trade. If 1 is bad we probably keep Headley. To say trade or not now is premature.

Why not keep both? Gyorko can't play second base. His best position is third. Probably limited to there as a major league player.

Why not keep both? Gyorko can't play second base. His best position is third. Probably limited to there as a major league player. Is Gyorko a can't-miss kinda guy? If not, trade HIM or put him in the outfield for a while. Headley's finally beginning to hit his position. To trade Headley for yet more "prospects" would nullify the Quentin and Street signings. Nobody is a "can't miss" prospect. How players adapt to the majors can be projected from their minor league experience but is not conclusive. Some players see a huge drop in production and others actually see a rise in production. You can only compare how your prospect compared to other prospects at the same age and level. Player | Age | Level | BA | OBP | SLG | OPS | Gyorko | 22 | A+ | 365 | 429 | 638 | 1.068 | Posey | 22 | A+ | 326 | 428 | 540 | 967 | Grandal | 22 | A+ | 296 | 410 | 510 | 920 | Alonso | 22 | A+ | 303 | 383 | 497 | 880 | Gyorko | 23 | AAA | 341 | 389 | 598 | 987 | Posey | 23 | AAA | 349 | 442 | 552 | 995 | Grandal | 23 | AAA | 335 | 442 | 521 | 962 | Alonso | 23 | AAA | 296 | 355 | 470 | 825 | Posey | 23 | MLB | 305 | 357 | 505 | 862 | Grandal | 23 | MLB | 312 | 349 | 597 | 947 | Posey | 24 | MLB | 284 | 368 | 389 | 756 | Alonso | 25 | MLB | 267 | 342 | 387 | 730 | Posey | 25 | MLB | 317 | 384 | 503 | 887 |
Gyorko has produced a higher BA (overall) and a higher SLG at both A+ and AAA. Notice Alonso wasn't as good as any of the other 3 and therefore didn't see MLB (in any significant PA) until he was 25 years old.

Considering the difference they expect offensively from him compared to an average 2B, they expect he could be well above average overall at 2B. But some time at 2B in MLB will answer that question. I expect to see that experiment soon.
