Alexi Amarista dove into first base in the 9th inning yesterday to beat a throw giving the Padres another run. I couldn't believe he beat the throw. It was a shot to third base which seemed routine enough to get the runner by a couple of steps. I wish I had it recorded. I would love to time him to first. Diving definitely made the difference. It was that close. He and Cabrera are sure a lot of fun to watch.

Of course it's a team effort, but the ineffective combo of Hudson/Bartlett damaged the Padres big time at season's start. The performance of Cabrera, Amarista, and Forsythe has given me good vibes for next season.

Maybin hitting better recently means our entire "up the middle' has been much more effective. Maybin is hitting .292 over last 12 games.

I think Hundley tried to do too much (taking home run swings) with the lack of offense at the beginning of the season. Hopefully when he rejoins the roster, he comes out on fire like last season when he returned from his injury

That will keep both fresh and lead many to wonder if either could play another position on occasion.

You are wrong. That is an old and incorrect baseball myth. It only slows you down if you don't know how to do it correctly. Amarista did it correctly. The first thing to hit the ground was his hand on the bag. He ran at the end leaning forward low to the ground and dove at exactly the correct time. It would have taken 3 additional steps to get his foot to the bag. Update: I can't believe I found this utube video when I searched for "sliding into first" Sliding into first.

If you could get there faster sliding why don't sprinters or guys running 40s dive to the finish?

It says that video is no longer available. But I remember that show. It proved that sliding incorrectly is slower. That is not at issue. The picture below is a great example of how not to dive into first base.

Using Usain Bolt's splits in his world record 100 Meters shows that he got to 90 feet in 3.457 seconds.
Sorry Mickey. 3.1 is a huge myth.
