Nothing new here. I have been telling my clients to have more babys for years. Need them to pay into Social Security. Only Mormons take my advice. China , with their one child policy, is a demographic time bomb.

I did not see where being out-bred by the immigrant Muslims is mentioned as a factor.

Just curious William. This issue has been identified for a long time. Nothing will change, and as was already mentioned only the Mormons are having 4+ kids. Nothing can be done about this. How many kids did you have? I had one, would have liked 2, it just didn't work out. Most of my friends have 2 or3 max.

Do not worry William. I found where Joel Kotkin is not an idiot after all. It may even be that only idiots claim such a widely acclaimed author is an idiot. Your thanks to =short may have been premature.

>>>China , with their one child policy, is a demographic time bomb. <<< Not just demographic... China is in turmoil on several fronts. Security boss Zhou knows too much, and according to this BBC article he will survive, but a senior officer with an intelligence background recently told me that Zhou will be allowed to retire with full benefits. Zhou is the only one on the ruling committee without a PhD, by the way. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-18147216On another front, the PLA is rife with corruption. Senior officers are allowed to run their own private businesses, and often use PLA facilities for their dealings, and they make deals with the military for personal gain. Senior level promotions are being bought rather than earned, and there is growing resentment about that among the junior officers and enlisted personnel.

I don't know the history of this policy, I'll have to research it a bit. I assume its in reaction to their population and the pace at which they consume resources. China is gobbling up the resources of Third World, Canada etc. as fast as they can. All of the countries of Africa are on the take from the Chinese. They consume timber, minerals and wildlife for consumption as fast as they can. A China at twice the size, realistically "carrying capacity" would have been exceeded long ago if it isn't already. These resources are not renewed as fast as they are consumed. There is a limit in there before the crash.

On the one hand, if China did not have the one child policy (and by the way, it's the girls they wanted rid of), there would be a few hundred million more mouths to feed than they already have. And find jobs for. Even without those, China is still faced with trying to find urban jobs for several millions of people migrating to the cities from the rural areas. Those nice gadgets and clothes and neat stuff designed by American companies are all made by young Chinese girls in what in the 19th Century we used to call "sweat shops". There will be a reckoning soon, I think.

Falling birthrates is a huge problem both ways. You stress resources as your population expands but you need that increasing population to fund some of our defined benefit programs. Big problem!

Once again you have explained why we are wasting our time reading anything by anyone until that author has been vetted by you. You do us a great service. AzWm Hey, I'm entitled to my opinion and my opinion is Kotkin is an idiot. Please explain to me why the right-wing on here get to attack progressive voices with impunity while those of us on the left (and actually most of us are moderates) get nothing but sarcasm from you? Most of us don't necessarily agree with some of Al Gore's over-the-top rhetoric, but you, Pooh and Dave constantly bring him up in order to avoid actually offering a decent argument. Really Will, do you want to support Kotkin's argument that the way to prosperity is women being more efficient baby factories? If so, make your case. Of course you won't because you never make any sort of case. You just offer these bull$#!+ commentaries and when someone challenges them, you run away and hide. If you'd like, I'll be more than happy to take apart his argument but I'll get no response from you and Pooh will just note the time that I wrote it. What you have on here is a right-wing dominated website where you or Pooh or Dave posts something and you, or Pooh or Dave basically responds with "ditto" and JOC just responds with nonsense. Pooh and Dave are trollers. JOC is Orange County brain dead. From you I'd expect more. =Bob

Maybe, but it does seem to me that China has figured out that there is a problem with dynasties so they believe they can claim they no longer have dynasties because their nominal head of the ruling party (anyone who claims it's a "Communist party" does not understand the dynamics of authoritarian governments) gets replaced after a certain number of years. I don't agree that China is in turmoil but I would agree that China has problems because it's ruled by committee. That's somewhat new to China given its history and rule by committee at the top is always a problem. =Bob

China , with their one child policy, is a demographic time bomb. Indeed it is because every country that has a ton more young men than young women will always be a time bomb. The most stupid thing any government could possible do would be to put its country in a position where there are a large number of young men who cannot find wives. =Bob

Generally, if you want to know who the next President or Chairman will be in China, look to the vice. They will spend at least ten years grooming the successors, and barring a big screw up, they will advance. They don't hire amateurs, like some Western countries.
