RHP Andrew Cashner will start Saturday and hopes to pitch two innings before turning the game over to Ross Ohlendorf -- another signee who could become the 12th pitcher to start a game for the Padres this season. How bizarre has it become? Well, as a reward for starting Saturday, Cashner will pack his bag after the game and head for Double-A San Antonio, where he will make three to four starts to extend his pitch count before he rejoins the Padres near the end of June to become part of the rotation. Don't like this move this quick. I was hoping Cashner would prove to be a stud set-up man and then eventually next year perhaps put him in the rotation. I think we're grasping at straws with this one.

And they are hurting at starting pitcher. Also, what use is a setup man when you don't win a bunch?

They should have done it BEFORE the season IMHO.

They should have done it BEFORE the season IMHO. On paper at least, the rotation going into the season looked like it was going to be solid. Though, a valuable SP is harder to find and/or develop than a reliever, so in that line of thinking I certainly would agree with you.

8 of the 12 starting pitchers invited to spring training are on the DL. The Padres have had an incredible string of bad luck with their starters this year. It made sense at the begining of the season to have Cashner in the bullpen. The Padres were not sure they would use him in the future as a starter or a closer. The way this season has progressed, they feel now is the time to see him as a starter. It makes sense. It is much easier to replace him in the bullpen than replacing another starter that goes on the DL. As I posted earlier.

Cashner had his second start at "AA" last night.
5 innings 3 hits 0 Walks 9 Ks 1 ER (Player stole home) 54 strikes 21 balls
It will be interesting to see him start.
Anthony Bass pitched 117 innings (combined) last year. The Padres don't want him starting the entire year. Especially with his recent struggles, I think he might be the one to go to the bullpen when Cashner comes up. It will give the Padres a good option for long relief, which is where Bass was slated this season before all the injuries.

It is quite interesting that Cashner and Rizzo will both be on display this week. Rizzo gets promoted to the Cubs and Cashner gets his first Start as a Padre.

Crazy to compare their stats without at least noting their ages. Trevor Bauer Birthdate: 1/17/1991 - 21 Andrew Cashner Birthdate: 9/11/1986 - 25 Huge difference. If their stats were equal Bauer would be a much better prospect.

Cashner came pretty close to a no-hitter in Houston. Lost the lead and ended with a no decision in the Padre win, but an excellent overall start

He mixed his pitches well and was hitting his spots. He was really upset when he finally gave up a hit and then a home run. They showed him in the dugout hanging his head and screaming f***.

I like his competitive nature. Also, did you notice his changeup's come in anywhere from 87-90 mph? Wow!!!!!!!

Could this snake-bitten season get worse? Casher injured in his last start, luckily it looks like the same thing that hit Street earlier this season and he was able to bounce back and make the All-Star team so hopefully Cashner can be back on the mound in 2-3 weeks.
Still. This Padres team is making a legitimate run at the starting the most players at pitcher in a season record set by the Mets. 13ish down, 9ish to go.
