Rymer Liriano and Cory Spangenberg were expectexd to be stars at Lake Elsinore this year. Both started the year not hitting well at all.
April Stats ..BA....OBP....SLG....Player .198 .244 .247 Rymer Liriano .239 .286 .293 Cory Spangenberg
But since that both have really been hitting a lot better
May and June Stats ..BA....OBP....SLG....Player .358 .403 .492 Rymer Liriano .336 .374 .450 Cory Spangenberg
After having a losing April, those two have led Lake Elsinore back to a winning record, one game out of first place.
Both are runners too.

Rymer Liriano is 20.9 years old. He is playing in "A+" Lake Elsinore. The average pitcher age in the Cal League is 23.0 (hitters 22.6). Last year he was named the Prospect of the Year and the Player of the year (the two are most often different players) in the 16 team Midwest League at 19/20 years old. Their average age is 21.5 H and 21.8 P) When he was promoted last year to "A+" Lake Elsinore he hit badly in his 61 PA. He started this year at The Lake and put up some really bad numbers in April.
Rymer Liriano stats at Lake Elsinore 2011 + April 2012 .169 BA .231 OBP .338 SLG .570 OPS 4 Stolen Bases 4 Caught Stealing
But he began to play better around the beginnig of May
Rymer Liriano stats at Lake Elsinore May through June 7 .374 BA .418 OBP .496 SLG .915 OPS 16 Stolen Bases 4 Caught Stealing
He currently on quite a streak: 16 hits in his last 29 AB (including 4-4 last night).
He plays Right Field and is rated by Baseball America as having the best outfield arm in the Padres organization. Last year he stole 65 Bases (caught 20), he had 30 doubles, 8 triples, and 12 home runs.
He was signed by the Padres as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic during 2007. He is a true 5 tool player.
If you go to a game at Lake Elsinore look out in right field for #28. You will be able to say, "I saw him when...".

Liriano is a true 5 tool talent, but his problem has been every time he gets promoted, he seems overmatched. AA, when he gets there, will be a true litmus test.

If he truly has 5 "tools"......he won't be coming off as overmatched. The kid is almost 21, he should be headed to AA ball. I'll say this....from what Bill is posting, the dude is on fire. You gotta like that. Hope it continues.

You gotta like that. Hope it continues. It is not unusal for young players getting a taste of a league too far to seem over matched. But what happens is they adjust, get confidence, and begin to rip even though they are playing with much older and better players for the first time. That is exactly what happened with Rymer. He turns 21 in a few days. He is right on the path of promotion that would be expected for an all-star. So nothing yet can be read into his numbers that would preclude that. Adjust, get confidence, and begin to rip 2011 .127 .213 .182 .395 (15 games) April .198 .272 .321 .593 May .330 .397 .450 .846 June .447.476 .632 1.108 (10 games) If this continues, he could see "AA" soon.

He is definitely on a tear. WHat round did we take him in? He was signed as a foreign free agent in 2007. He listed as from: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is rated the Padres #3 prospect. I think he is #1. I was curious so I looked it up: At Lake Elsinore Player Age Headley 22 .291 .389 .434 Forsythe 22 .322 .472 .504 Hundley 22 .278 .357 .403 Spangenberg 21 .298 .343 .403 (so far) At "A+" not The LakeMaybin 20 .304 .393 .486 Alonzo 21 .316 .440 .368 Rizzo 19 .295 .371 .420 Rizzo 20 .248 .333 .479 Gwynn 20 .280 .364 .326 Gwynn 22 .271 .370 .338 At "AA" 509 at bats (So much for struggling being an indication of problems - age matters a lot) Venable skipped Lake ElsinoreFort Wayen 23 .314 .389 .477

I didn't realize that BP had hime #1. That's cool. I agree with them. In the list of prospects click on #19 Adys Portillo. You will see something very interesting. 2011 he had a .367 BAA on balls in play (BABIP) and a 7.11 ERA 2012 he has a .218 BAA on balls in play (BABIP) and a 1.92 ERA Towers talked about luck. Both the 7.11 and 1.92 ERAs are aberrations (bad luck and good luck) of how he is actually pitching. This is known because no pitcher can maintain those extreme BABIP numbers over an extended period of time. It always swings back to the norm. BABIP, for pitchers, show little consistency year to year. Hitters can effect it more by being more line drive type hitters or hitting more ground balls than fly balls.
If Towers wants to trade for your pitcher, you better check to see if his BABIP is unusually high. That is how we got Bell from the Mets.

If this continues, he could see "AA" soon. He is now in "AA". Promoted over the "AA" all-star game break. Plays his first game there today. "AA" at 21 is very young. I don't expect him to hit very well right away. Donavan Tate who struggled at Fort Wayne is promoted to Lake Elsinore. I think that is more because the Padres want to skip compensation pick Travis Jankowski straight to advanced "A" at the Lake. Maybe a change of scenery will help Donavan who is looking more and more like a bust.

The learning curve for multi-sport athletes is just so much more substantial. Tate's primary focus in high school was not baseball, and he's never played the sport full-time. If he can stay healthy, I think he has the tools. He just has a ton of developmental time to make up for that was lost due to injuries, suspensions, etc.

A way too early look at "AA" Numbers
3 hits in his first 6 ABs, including a double.

A way too early look at "AA" Numbers 3 hits in his first 6 ABs, including a double. It seems Rymer takes a while to get going at a new level. As I documented above, Rymer started real slow at High A. Rymer Liriano Stats at Lake Elsinore..BA....OBP....SLG...When .198 .244 .247 April .358 .403 .492 May and June After his promotion to "AA" San Antonio he seems to be following the same pattern. He has been on fire his last 8 12 games after seeming to be totally lost at the plate. Rymer Liriano Stats at San Antonio..BA....OBP....SLG...When .180 .189 .258 0.447 First 90 PA .447 .527 .617 1.144 August (55 PA) Note: Updated with games through 8/16 He is one of the players I am most excited about in the minors. Last year at "A" Fort Wayne he was named the Midwest League's Prospect of the Year. The League has 16 teams. That is a lot of players to be selected from, by the managers, as the best MLB prospect. This year he was a Futures Game Selection. Rymer is a true 5 tool player. A RF with a great arm, great defense, steals, hits for power, hits for average. He turned 21 on June 20.
Chase Headley hit: .330 .437 .580 1.016 at San Antonio but was 2 years and one month older when he did it.
