One of the pieces the Padres got in the Latos trade was a 23 year old minor league catcher. Many thought he was the main player in the trade. Today, the Padares called him up from "AAA" Tucson. Yasmani GrandalHe is the #68 rated minor leaguer, overall. This will be his major league debut.

Wow, would have thought they would bring up a pitcher since Suppan was DFA. Guess they need to give the guy a chance though since even first string catcher is up for grabs with the weak two already here.

Other than the injuries, Nick Hundley is the biggest disappointment this year. After he finished so strong last year, most thought he would be a bright spot.

Grandal sent back down.
I am sure he was told that was the plan was before the call up. He was given a taste for what he is working toward. Interesting move. He only got one at bat during his weekend vacation in the majors.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. He is a catcher. It would be interesting to see who he was talking to while the Padres were in the field. Calling games is a big part of catching at the major league level. Maybe having a roster spot at home for a few days was an opportunity for Grandal getting a little OJT.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. We don't need 3 catchers on the roster. Get him at bats in the minors.

The Padres have the lowest winning % in the majors. Let's see what the kids can do. Hundley will be 29 this year, and has a career .703 OPS. I doubt he's about to blow up, dude. Grandal is 23, and was posting a .921 OPS in AAA when he got called up. I don't see how he can be any worse than Hundley.

Didn't he just sign a three year extension?

Anthony Rizzo's stats (he's 22) in AAA this year: .356, 17 HR, 46 RBI, 1.128 OPS We already know Rizzo can hit at the AAA level. But he has to shorten that swing to hit at the major league level.

Nick has developed into one of our club's core players," said general manager Josh Byrnes. "He impacts the game on both offense and defense and has evolved into a leader on the field and in the clubhouse." At least Hundley is throwing out runners this year.

Can Grandal effectively play the outfield? Have no clue but catchers don't usually play in the outfield.

We already know Rizzo can hit at the AAA level. But he has to shorten that swing to hit at the major league level. Did a pro scout tell you that? No but all you have to do is look at his numbers at the AAA level. He has a big hole in his swing that he has to fix and that is pretty common knowledge.

Big hole huh....so he posts 1100 OPS and a .356 average with a "BIG" hole in his swing....I wonder what he'd hit with just a "little" hole in it.

That is why is wasn't hitting at the major league level last year. I have heard them talk about it on tv before and also read about it in print and online.

Can Grandal effectively play the outfield? Have no clue but catchers don't usually play in the outfield. If you can hit, a big league club will find a spot for you. Craig Biggio moved to second, Phil Nevin to third, etc. Bryce Harper was an amateur catcher. Besides, I was just speculating. If the Padres are too cheap to eat Hundley's extension salary, it's time to start looking at options. Grandal is 23, it's his time. Get Hundley outta there.
