I remember when I was playing football at Mission Bay in the early nineties, we faced off against Oceanside in the CIF championship game at the Murph'. WE were up by two touchdowns at half time, and while I was walking out of the locker room to head out to the field, I saw Junior walking into the Oceanside Locker room, we made eye contact, and he gave me a warm smile.
Oside came out of the locker room and played a great second half, and ended up beating us to a pulp. fun game.
I'll never forget that smile.

Great article...this team, and the Aztecs of 2010 were my two favorite teams ever! Padres of 98 distant 3rd.

Sadly, I'm not the least bit surprised.
Ever since that previous suicide attempt (and don't tell me that he, "Fell asleep," when he drove over that cliff) I've been waiting for this to happen. I hoped he would get help, I hoped that those around him would be able to get him to accept medical help for his depression, but it doesn't appear to have happened.
And that's sad. Junior did a ton of stuff for the community (especially Oceanside, naturally), and he had a lot left that he could do (and probably would have done).
Forget the football stuff, Junior really did care about his community. He wasn't perfect - he had a dark side - but his heart was usually in the right place.
I used to tease Oceanside fans about how Vista owned the Pirates while Seau was there. That was a big yardstick by which to measure my Panthers - they beat a damned good Pirate team led by Junior Seau! Twice! In dominating fashion. That said a lot because Junior was that good, even back then. Now when I think about how Vista dominated Seau's team it will just be kind of sad because of what happened today.
I do think that he pulled a Dave Duerson. I really think that he kept his brain intact for medical study. Hopefully something good comes of this in the long run.

It is very tragic to hear, and he was only 43 and still in the prime of life.
