All young, all good defensive players, and all, I believe, ready to improve significantly this year. Headley had a lot of very good offensive numbers last year but they only offset his lack of power. Adding even moderate power to those numbers would make him one of the best 3B in baseball. His spring looks like maybe that power will come this year. He is only 27 and a lot of players mature into power. Hundley has missed at least a month in each of the last 3 years. Last year he only had 70 AB in May, June and July and suffered a miserable time at the plate in those 70 AB. When he finally played again in August he finished the year with 134 plate appearances in which he hit: .367 BA .656 SLG .395 OBP Hundley is also one Padre that actually hits at home during the past 3 years he hit .280 .353 .496 at Petco Park. That is close to a .500 SLG at Petco. Last year he was .307 .373 .562 !! Will Venable is a great right fielder defensively and runs the bases great. He has been plagued with over thinking the game at the plate. He has always been in an experiment to try to change something to improve his hitting. He needed to relax and stay with one approach and let it fly. This year he seems to have finally done that. The results in spring training are encouraging. He has always looked like a guy who could be a super star. Maybe this year he will hit more like he looks

I'm good with Hundley. As for Chase he even said in today's UT that he needs to hit with more power and drive in more runs specially with runners on third and less than two outs. I don't think he's in the conversation for "one of the best" 3B in baseball, yet. Is he a good 3b? Sure, one of the best? No, not even, he'll have to improve his power numbers, greatly. Here is a small comparison of w/OBA which gives value for each type of hit and BB's, as I'm sure you already know, for a few of the top 3B in the game today. Just in case here is a link of the definition of w/OBA from Fangraphs.com www.fangraphs.com/library/index.php/offense/woba/Adrian Beltre .379 Miggy Cabrera .436 Evan Longoria .365 Pablo Sandoval .379 Kevin Youkilous .366 This list doesn't include Jose Bautista, Mark Reynolds who has moved to 1B, nor David Freese or Alex Rodriguez whom all have a higher w/OBA than Headley. Ryan Roberts for comparison has a .338 w/OBA Chase Headley's w/OBA was .344 The average for 2011 was .316 and for 3B it was .309. Now if he hits with more power, as he has said himself he needs to, then he gets in the conversation as "one of the best in baseball." Until then, not in my opinion. Now, in my opinion, Venable is the quandary for our team. He seems to have meshed rather nicely with Plantier and Powell. If he can hit with even a semblance of consistency then we might have something special in RF as well as help to propel our team to a much better record. Time will tell.

But increasing his power would change all those numbers. He already leads the NL in OBP for 3B. Adding moderate power would move him significantly. Headley also has to find a way to hit at home. He was 2nd among NL 3B in OPS on the road but way down the list at home.

His homer from the right side last night was pretty cool to see.

Headley hit his 5th Home Run in the first today against the Dodgers. He didn't hit his 5th home run last year...ever. He currently has a .932 OPS on the road and .729 OPS at home. That is better in both places than last year by a good bit. Headley OPS Year Home Road 2012 .774 .932 <--- Updated after 2 run double today. 2011 .674 .864 ------------------- +++ .100 .068 <--- Increase over last year.

So far so good. .280 .353 .411 .764 Significantly better than 2011's .246 .310 .395 .705 And it should get even better as the road and home games even out.
