Maybe. Dude has had 1 good half season If they wait until he has 1.5 good seasons the cost could be very much higher. That is where scouting comes in.
I like Luebke a lot. In 139 innings last year had 154 Ks. Only 2 NL pitchers had a better ratio. Luebke is top 5 in WHIP and top 10 in K/BB. He has good stuff.

One other thing about Luebke is that Petco Park didn't make him look better than he really is.
Luebke on the road (NL rating 60+ innings) 2.55 ERA (#4) .187 Batting Average Against (#2) 1.00 WHIP (#2) .260 On Base Against (#2) .310 SLG Against (#2) 11.21 Ks/9 Innings pitched (#1)

Yeah all the numbers show this as a great signing. I love this signing. We need to keep bringing up good young talent and then identify and sign the ones we want to five, six or seven years contracts, early. Buying out arbitration and one or two free agent years.

Note: Padres drafted Luebke with the draft compensation for letting Alan Embree walk. This is a player the Padres acquired directly due to the Sandy Alderson / Kevin Towers efforts to take advantage of new compensation rules by gaming the system.
