Per East County Magazine emergency alert at 3 p.m.:
August 21, 2010 (East County) - 3pm--The fire that began in El Monte Valley early this afternoon has now swelled to 1,500 to 2,000 and is spreading fast towards the north and east.
ECM reporter Dennis Richardson reports the fire has crested the top of El Capitan and is burning north in the direction of San Diego Country Estates and the Cedar Creek Falls area. Fire is also burning eastward near the dam in Cleveland National Forest and there is a spot fire in trees in the riverbed in El Monte Fire.
Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter has evacuated 10 people, including 8 residents and two climbers trapped on the face of El Capitan earlier. Cause of the fire is not yet know. El Monte Park is also evacuated.
U.S. Forest Service and Cal-Fire are now in joint command with multiple other agencies assisting in battling the fast-moving blaze. Winds are now kicking up, at around 20 mph.
