In canepas ut article today it referenced Fisher as one of San Diego's mount Rushmore coaches which made me wonder, if we had a mount Rushmore for our all-time best sdsu coaches, who would be on it? Remember only 4 people.

Fisher and Coryell are the obvious. The other 2 are up for debate. I say Beth Burns gets a slot. She's taken us to as many Sweet Sixteens as Fish. After that, IDK, whoever coached the National Championship Men's volleyball team?

For honorable mention, on the "lesser Mt Rushmore" (Rushmore Hill?), I'd put Smokey Gaines, Jim Dietz, Tim Vezie, and.......?

One of the problems that plague many organizations is a failure to maintain institutional memory. I think we are seeing this in the current thread. Obviously . . . . repeat, obviously . . . any list of great Aztec coaches should include the name George Ziegenfuss. The man was a great coach and served SDSU well for decades. (from Wikipedia): Ziegenfuss was the winningest and longest-tenured head coach for the San Diego State Aztecs men's basketball team, serving from 1948 until 1969. He compiled 316 wins during his tenure, winning five conference championships.[2][3] He was inducted into the Aztecs Hall of Fame in 1994.[4]I would also nominate (though not so emphatically) Bill Schutte, head footall coach at State from '47 through '55. He later served as an assistant to Coryell. goaztecs.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/101702aaa.htmlAzWm

Sorry, but Canepa said best SAN DIEGO coaches, not just SDSU coaches.
In terms of SDSU coaches in Fisher's league, there are two:
1. Coryell 2. Fisher
In terms of San Diego coaches in Fisher's league, there are three:
1. Coryell 2. Fisher 3. Gillman
(None of the Padre coaches fit in this category because it was mostly a revolving door. Plus, even the two coaches who made runs to the World Series, had interspersed those seasons with stretches of poor play or mediocrity.)

But Mt. Rushmore? Don't think so. The guy coached an NAIA squad and a DII squad. Even then, he never won much of consequence in the post season. He also typically had a winning record, but not a great record. (A lot of 16-14 and 18-12 seasons. He only had two 20-win seasons -- the final two of his career.) Fisher is on a whole different level than Coach Z. in terms of national spotlight, level of competition, talent, etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_State_Aztecs_men%27s_basketball

Bill Schutte was a fine coach and replacing him with Paul Governali awas a joke.Schutte devised the "Spin T"which was used by the great COP[now UOP]teams of Eddie La Barron and Dick Bass.

Worthy of recognition, yes. And I'll leave it there.

Yeah I'm aware what canepa said but this is an Aztec board so I posed an Aztec question. If you want to consider where our Aztec coaches rank amongst all time sd coaches fine, but I was just interested in an Aztec comparison.

The best coaches did not necessarly have the best resources or institutional support
Tom Ables would have the best read on this subject.
for the major sports - Coryell, Fisherare no-brainers
some of the other names mentioned did better as assistants than HC
