Love this. Keeping Maybin long term is a great decision that serves every aspect of the clubs needs. Not only does this lock up CF for a handful of years with a well above average defensive CF at PetCo, Maybin is a high character, charismatic kid who can be the face of the Padres today and going forward. He makes it fun to go to a Padres game even if they're not the most competitive team.

Buys out 2 of his free agent years at a cheap price.

I think it was. It's the model the Rays use down in TB, to much success. Its the model the older, 90's version Indians used to build that franchise which was a perennial championship contender for a decade. This contract if I understood it correctly, bought out two more years of arbitration, and two years of free agency with another club option after that. The money saved will be a lot. In my opinion this the model to go with, identify players early and give them a little security without having to break the bank for them. If we continue to do this right I think it'll help stabilize our ball club for the near future. Tampa Bay did this with Longoria, I'm not comparing Maybin to Longoria by any means, for a seven year $48 million dollar contract. I think TB feels pretty good with that contract in hand as Longoria could reasonably expect to see $18 -$20 million a year if he weren't under that contract, easily in his first free agent year. Arbitration alone would've jacked his salary up to $8 - $10 million a year by year four or five at the latest.

John, Part of this is the Padres giving Maybin an insurance policy against a career ending injury (or even just below expectations results). Because of that, the Padres get a discount on the deal but assume the risk. A player is willing to take a guaranteed salary below what he would be willing to take a few years later. For the player it is a simple dynamic of risk avoidance and current living standard increase. Necessary? No. But it was smart and probably a money saver in the long run. It also insures the Padres against paying a lot more or losing Maybin if he explodes.

This is probably a good move by the Padres, Maybin will continue to improve and eventually become one of the best outfielders in the NL.
