Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus released his top 100 prospects free. top 100 38. Grandal 52. Liriano 53. Erlin 57. Gyorko 58. Spangenberg 74. Wieland 78. Kelly 86. Alonso 94. Hedges 95. Ross Note: 75. Rizzo Padres own 10 of the top 100. Since there are 30 teams, each teams "fair share" is about 3 prospects. Kevin Goldstein is another baseball writer (for money) that really likes the Padres minor leagues. It is interesting that he has Grandal rated above Liriano. Most consenus is that Liriano is #1 in the org. 10 Padres 07 A's 06 Pirates 05 Many 01 Dodgers

Liriano will probably be playing for Lake Elsinore this year. It will make a trip there early a must because a real good start may get him promoted.

Meanwhile we have Peavy and Latos to show for ours.. and both of them are gone. The Dodgers are going to be a far more competitive team than we will be for at least the next 2 years but hey let's hang our hat on what some random dude ranked our minor league system.

Goldstein isn't a random dude there are plenty of clubs that pay to get info and opinions on hiswork. To ignore the minor system is dumb, the Padres are on the right path of being able to be successful while having a small payroll, the Dodgers system is pathetic and it is a bad sign for high market teams because that is generally how you get top expensive talent.

The Dodgers signed their homegrown star Kemp for 8 years, $160M. Bill will be appalled at that obscene amount, after all..he could have been traded for a couple guys on an obscure Baseball America list!

They also recently drafted and developed stud Carlos Santana, but foolishly dealt him to the Indians for Casey Blake during their playoff run in 2009.

In Bill's defense....Loney is a decent player, but nothing extraordinary. Good batting average, but zero power at a premium position, and Ethier was not a homegrown Dodger in the true sense of the word. Other than that, no argument from me.

The Padres also have many other players from their minors. But the point about the Dodgers is a good one and the Padres will be getting players more at that level over the next 4 years from their farm system...that is exactly the point.

You're actually corrected on Ethier, good point. He was developed in the A's system.
