Ryan is good. I like him a lot. But man has the RB position taken a serious dive over the past 10 years. Linebackers are so big and strong now they make it impossible for RBs to stay young and healthy.

Kid works hard. He just needs to focus on holding on to the ball in traffic. Runs hard, good speed, can catch the ball out of the backfield, just hold on to it and he'll be fine.

Mathews is a good running back, but a Pro Bowler? Mathews 2012 stats:
#12 in rushing yards. 1,091 rushing yards. (One of 15 running backs to eclipse 1,000 yards). Averaged 77 yards per game. 5 fumbles, which ties him with Cedrick Benson for most RB fumbles in the NFL. His longest run of the year was 39 yards. He seems injury prone. One traditional knock is that he has trouble picking up blitz. Don't know if that's still valid.
Does anyone think he worth the two #1 picks we spent? Some argue there's little or no drop-off between Matthews and undrafted free agent Tolbert.

Just two different types of backs. It doesn't help that Norv doesn't know how to use them properly.

Mathews is too injury prone, if the Chargers make it to the playoffs next year depth at RB will be crucial. Remember the images of a dinged up LT unable to go vs. New England in the AFC championship game? Ryan has some big play ability, team that up with Tolbert and another quality back and the Chargers might have something.

Yeah, talk about a guy who doesn't deserve to be there!
A.J. blew it BIG TIME when he took Mathews. There was a stud D lineman there waiting to fill Jamal Williams' shoes, but Smith went with Mathews instead. Another OOPS pick. Good to great running backs are almost always available in the 2nd & 3rd rounds, stud D Linemen aren't.
