The Padres should have gotten Elsbury, Kelly and that Cuban SS Boston has for Agon at the very least. Imagine an outfield of Elsbury, Maybin and Quentin? No Barlett at SS and Cabby at 2nd? Do you really think the Padres didnt try to get those players? Nobody in their right mind would've traded Ellsbury and the Cuban SS. The Red Sox had all the power and leverage in that process.

Ellsbury was taken off the table almost immediately. That was not happening. Clay Buchholz, maybe. Padres got a good haul, Kelly at the very least should be a solid starter. We were never going to be able to keep Adrian.

Every team has contracts they would like to dump. It would be nice to be able to reallocate that money, but it doesn't work that way. The Padrs bad contracts are much better than most teams. It is another advantage they have.
