I know this has been discussed over and over, but can't believe the Aztecs could have had this guy instead of CL. Yea, he would have been gone in two, but would have left us on an upswing instead of dead like CL. There was a lot of anti Harbor sentiment on Aztectalk at the time. Loser Chargers could only dream about having this guy. Chargers have under-achieved because they have not had strong leadership that made "team" first. Great players, but "prima donas", like Seau and LT have been allowed to dictate the spotlight. Look at the difference in the Niners!

Hard to fathom isn't it. When they anounced they were paying a search service 100's of thousands of dollars before they even hired Fatso, I can't even remember his name now, I was dumbfounded. We had Harbaugh in our own back yard, in '96 he was one dropped pass from taking the Colts to the Superbowl, QB with the Chargers, 2 years w/USD building the program from nothing. What do you need, to be slapped on the head?? Well after hiring Chuck Long maybe it's not so hard to believe. I grew up as a kid on Campanile, watched Coryell at Aztec Bowl, watched Peterson Gym being built , used to play over the line at Gwyn Stadium before it was built. and then for this? It was really sickening. Do they ever consult the Alumni? Obviously these administrators are being paid way too much!!

Hindsight is always brighter, sadly. At the time, coming off the off-field issues that contributed to Tom Craft's dismissal, it was made known to the staff that Harbaugh had not one but three DUIs. That, combined with the very uncomfortable public spat with his alma mater, made him too controversial to hire at that time when we needed stable, mature leadership to right the ship. He wanted the job but he was ruled out.
It turned out to be a bad decision but at the time, they had to go on what they knew.

I can forgive, but not forget. After Coryell I guess the lesson is you need to have a guy with burning desire, a real fire and determination to lead a football team. Evidently hard to find a guy like that. Experiencing the success of the Coryell years and then having to watch us languish in footbal for 30-40 years makes you critical of who is running the program.
Lucky for Stanford the DUI's didn't sway them.
