Just got back from the MLK Jr., Day Showcase at Hoover. Saw some outstanding basketball games as did Fisher and Dutcher who were on hand for two of the games.
The match-up between Francis Parker and La Costa Canyon was a classic and a shocker. Parker came into the game with only a 7-8 record and led most of the way against the 17-2 Mavericks, only to lose on a long desperation buzzer beater by David Travers who is headed for Georgia State. I suspect Fish and Duch liked what they saw of Matt Shrigley who played well, but I was most impressed by Dalante Dunklin who it is reported may be headed for UCSB.
He looks to be a real team leader and is surrounded by a very young team with only one other senior. His motor never slows up as he plays hard from baseline to baseline with a strong will to get to the basket and score.
Speaking of motors, Jim Tomey's is still stuck in high gear and spends more time on the court than Jim Boylen, bringing the concept of a 6th man to a new dimension.
The Hoover/El Camino game was terrific as well. The Wildcats couldn't miss in the first quarter and jumped out to a 21-5 lead on the Cards home court. Hoover is loaded with talent though and dominated the last three quarters to win going away. Christopher Jones is another player with plenty of will and talent to get to the basket and Damonte Holiday is a sophomore to watch. Dayton Boddie (headed to UCR) is a solid player for the Wildcats but my favorite player of the night was Imanni Sobers a Junior who is generously listed at 5-9, but took great care of the ball against fierce pressure and continuously made those around him better with unselfish play and great assists.
