Hopefully Katz's and Butlet's commitment and Baxter's pending commitment to SDSU convince Marc to become and Aztec

I really don't understand how some people on this board don't like this move. All it does is add to the competition at QB. It's not like Long is just going to hand him the job, he'll have to compete for it.
Plus Katz and Butler transferring creates more press about SDSU Football that other recruits read. They see these two want to come to SDSU, which might convince them to follow suit.

I get the sense that some people who read and post here are emotionally vested in a particular player winning out at a position. Then there are others, like me, who prefer to have the greatest level of competition possible at all positions so the starters and the rest of the depth chart are all made better.

Yeah........not so sure about this one. I would much rather see the guys currently on the roster and Morin get the first look. But what it also suggests is that the guys already here are not up to par, and we know that Katz isn't exactly Andrew Luck, so what does that tell us? I'd rather see them focused on the long term replacement for Lindley rather than a one year rental. Assuming Katz isn't a first round NFL pick (and he isn't), and assuming he won't lead the Aztecs to a BC$ bowl game (which he most likely won't), I'm not sure that bringing him in benefits the program as a whole all that much. Bringing in a guy who has started at a pac10 school benefits the program greatly. Look, Jefferies and Morin are both young. A Fr QB is going to struggle most of the time. If one of the current QB's beat out Katz then we are in great shape. But what if they need a year more of seasoning? You would be howling about how we don't have anyone other than a Fr. Katz is a great insurance policy, and cheap at that. He only ties up a scholarship for one year. This is a great thing for sdsu. He may tie up a scholarship for 1 year but he is probably taking some poor fools spot as a Grad student when their hard to come by .

If he can come in and help the competition for QB, then great. It obviously sends a message to the other QB's that they need to step it up. They should have already gotten that message when the coaching staff wanted Morin to come in during the Spring to compete.

In the ASR article they only mention a sophomore, redshirt freshman and freshman...does that mean that Bernards has left the team?
I don't seem to remember anything on him leaving the team.

I believe he meant quarterbacks that will actually compete for the job. Bernards has no shot at all to win this thing.

I love that the coaches are going all in for next season with no hesitation. Boise State lost 17 starters and now 2 coaches so they aren’t the easy favorite next year. Our toughest games are on the road next year and having an experienced starting quarterback should give us some added help. I say go all in for winning the MW Championship and then use that success with entering the Big East to land better recruits next year.

I have great faith in Rocky doing what's right for next year. But, to my untrained eye--and, yes I have read all the reasons in this thread why it's good for our young QB's--for me this speaks volumes about what we have on the roster at the QB slot. A quick fix for a serious problem. Time will tell, but I view this as a move forced by what is in the wings waiting. The Rock has more faith in his incoming recruit freshman who can redshirt than he does in our roster QB's. Whatever, guess you can't have enough QB's. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

I still find myself wondering about 2013 when we step up a notch in competition and have to rely on an untested QB. I'd rather give Dingwell/ Jeffries some game experience against what should be an easier schedule this year.

Rocky doesn't want a down year and needs some experience at QB. Competition is always good.
Welcome Ryan Katz!

After reading it a few times, I surmise that you think Morin will be a bust and Katz is " their Guy." I also assume you are implying that Jeffries, Bernards and Dingwell will not be good either since you don't mention them?

Katz stature and arm reminds me of David Lowery (1992 team) and Jack Hawley (1999 team). With the upgrades in the WR/OL/RB positions, we may see the kind of offensive fireworks we haven't seen since Faulk/Darnay Scott was here. I'm sure Ludwig will be able to work more magic with the new incoming offensive arsenal.

I hope he is too. Otherwise he'll be taking up space and a scholarship.
I still remember Rocky saying in a post-season interview, he was concerned about D-line. But to this point there doesn't appear to be much attention given to the immediate future as has been given to the offense. Our offense should be okay next season but I fear for the defense.

Let's hope we land Molesi or someone else we aren't aware of.
