Don't like the move at this point, could have held out for a better opportunity. Cashner definitely has power stuff, but I just don't see this as enough of a return for what could be an All-Star first baseman.

This trade opens up some questions at first base. Blanks? Guzman? Alonzo? Or perhaps the Padres bring in a veteran power hitter.
Bottom line for me is that the Padres got fleeced in the Adrian Gonzalez deal. Where is Casey Kelly?
The Padres need to get back to what they do well, giving free agents and veterans a second lease on their careers. Remember the '05 and '06 teams? Pennant contending teams built with veteran players such as Mark Loretta, Ramon Hernandez, Brian Giles, Dave Roberts, Mike Cameron, Mike Piazza, Ryan Klesko ect. At least those guys could hit (and win) in Petco Park. The current crop of prospects have been a disaster. This isn't surprising and is true to form for the Padres who haven't had an All Star calibre hitter come from their farm system and contribute since the days of Robbie Alomar and Carlos Baerga.
Carlos Quinten is a quality pickup, but the Padres need a few more veteran hitters. If Venable and Blanks can hit their way into the lineup, so be it, however as evidenced by this trade, the youth movement isn't working.

I think the Padres see him as a starter. Cashner may turn out to be a good starter. Most of his MLB experience was as a 23 year old relief pitcher while most all of his minor league appearances were as a starter. He was injured last year and pitched very well in relief after his return in September. The Padres could use him in the long relief / spot start role that Stauffer/Luebke/Bass have manned so well over the past 2 years. He may also become a starter in place of the newly aquired Reds pitcher, if Edinson Volquez doesn't rebound from his injury as the Padres hope. The Padres have a lot of options for starters. 1. Stauffer 2. Luebke 3. Richard 4. Moseley 5. Bass 6. Volquez 7. Cashner

Developing pitchers is one thing the Padres are good at.

It seems the Padres will use Cashner as a set up man this year because of his lack of innings and recent injury.
They project him to be a starter in the future.
Using him as a starter this year would require him to be shut down later in the year. He may move from the setup man to a starter later in the year, if needed, and the bullpen develops a replacement. It would have to be late enough that his innings don't go over are 140 total.

I wasn't opposed to dealing Rizzo, I am just baffled at how little the Padres got in return. It will be interesting to track the careers of Rizzo and this Cashner kid to see how this ends up.
Perhaps Rizzo's star has faded to "insiders". I have no clue.
Hoping for the best, though.

who trades a position player with potential to be a very good first baseman for a pitcher who is coming off an injury?

who trades a position player with potential to be a very good first baseman for a pitcher who is coming off an injury? The amazing Josh Byrnes. I was okay with his previous few trades, but this one is awful. Maybe worse than some of those deals he made as the D-Backs GM...

Not that I'm one to defend the Padres but Kelly was the Heart of the AGonz deal.

Everyone who was critical of the Gonzo trade is now validated. We got nothing of real value for one of the best players in baseball. That's encouraging.

Well, did you expect anything else from the Padres front office?? Typical bait and switch. Make it look like you are trying to improve the team by acquiring a mediocre player with a name, (Quentin), then dump one of your top prospects for nothing. Moorad is the new Moores If Mark Cuban buys the Dodgers, I will start rooting for the team I despised growing up Sorry, but as a Padre Fan for nearly 40 years, I have had enough

Well this obvioulsy is in response to
A) the horrible season Rizzo had in the bigs and B) the first baseman we got in the Latos deal.
With Blanks, Rizzo, Guzman and the new guy we had 4 first baseman.
