You're absolutely right, but Jonny look at what we have on offense. We know Moorad's not going to pony up any cash for marquee free agents, so if he at least allows Brynes to roll the dice on a $7MM player like Quentin then I'll take it. He is arbitration eligible, and if he under performs the Padres can just let him walk in 2013. He will take a walk (respectable .340ish OBP guy), and he has some power. I would be happy if we could get this line from him: .250/.330 with 20 HR and 65 RBI

Nice pickup? .252 lifetime hitter who can't stay healthy?
That's a joke. Damned few teams would have had any interest in the guy other than being a bench player. He's a marginal player at best, a waste of money at worst.
How is he significantly better than the guys the Padres already have? Playing half his games at Petco he's probably only good for 18 HRs this year and maybe 75 RBI with a .240 average. Big whoop. Like that's going to help the Padres win more games.
The Padres need guys who can hit over .280 with 25+ HRs to make a difference. They've already got a bunch of .240 hitters who don't have enough power to knock it out of Petco.
And if he really was any good the White Sox wouldn't have let him go for a couple marginal prospects. The Sox unloaded payroll (in this case an overpaid player).

His all or nothing approach at the plate will need to change if he is going to hit over .210 at Petco. Let's pray he can give the Padres 400 at bats this year. Maybe him in the lineup will help Blanks hit 20 + HRs. Stay healthy Q!!

Castro and Hernandez were not marginal prospects, Erik. Castro was the #3 rated prospect just last season on one of the deepest, if not THE deepest system in baseball (I'm not the only one with that opinion). He regressed this season due to a number of factors, and was considered expendable due to the tremendous pitching depth we have in AA/AAA (Kelly, Wieland, Oramas, Erlin, etc). Hernandez is a lefty that was well thought of. Now I assume you'll probably spin it around and say we gave up that for a mediocre bat in Quentin. Not the case, either. If Quentin can stay healthy, he'll be fine in the middle of our lineup, and he's still only 29.

I don't like his profile as a hitter for Petco Park.
Batted Balls 2011.
14.3% Line Drives 32.2% Ground Balls 53.5% Fly Balls Fly Balls Breakdown 16.9% In Field Fly Balls 36.6% Outfield Fly Balls
17% of balls he hit were fly balls to the infield. That has to change. That is why his batting average is so low.
He is also not so hot defensively.
I am cautiously optimistic but not holding my breath.

This is a little bit better in trying to put a competitive product on the field. I understand that he may not produce like in the AL since he'll be in Petco but to me it shows me as a fan that they are at least trying. But like all moves, will we trade him later for more minor leaguers and continue the never ending cycle of giving up our best players? But I'm trying to stay positive and look at this like as a glass half full type of thing.
On the bright note, it's nice to see a local back where he grew up so we can root him on. Good luck Carlos!!

I would much rather the Padres work on long term deals for Maybin and Hundley this year.
