There is another topic that borders on this, but this question needs to be posed on its own.
If you or a loved one were dying of a terminal illness and you knew that the prolongation of that final dying period would be painful and totally undignified with tubes and machines all around you and in you, would you chose the opportunity to be put to sleep if it was offered?
I know that several religions teach that this is murder. If you say no to assisted suicide (with pills from a doctor or with assistance from another) please state that it is on religious grounds. You do not need to identify the religion if you do not want to.
By the way, my father told me that many doctors in the 1930's would assist their patients to an easy death if it was requested. Doctor assisted final passage has been going on for a long time.

Sadly, too few people want to talk about this vital subject. Unless we check out via the sudden heart attack route, (My preferred way to go. As Redd Foxx used to say, "The Big H." )
If God has decided that it is time for me to go, I sure hope that they do not revive me so that I can sit in a wheelchair peeing in my diapers and drooling at everybody who comes to visit for the next five years. What really gets me is when they say, "Oh Grandpa you look fine, today."
That, of course, is a line of $#!+ that is part of our culture. (We lie for lying sake to be polite.)
The reality is my shirt will be all wet with drool, my head keeps falling to the right on my right shoulder, so my wife had to hold it up until I regain control over it. I am sitting in wet and poop stained diapers and can not do a damned thing for myself. Hell, somebody will probably have to spoon feed me.
If that is living and looking fine, somebody has a totally perverted sense of humor.
When you are going to die, DIE! Get it over with.
If by some miracle from the Demonic Forces a Paramedic manages to revive you after your brain has been starved for Oxygen for five minutes, there has to be a way to be put to sleep rather than doing the drooling wheelchair thing for the next five or six years.

I have a "living will", and you should as well. Good planning and informed decision making well before hand are in order. Just don't let some nit wit bureaucrat make those decisions for you for economic reasons in the best interests of "The State".

That is a hard question. With sound planning you can answer it for yourself. As to someone else I can not say. I do understand that more than half of health care costs are spent in end of life situations. Can we afford that? Is it right to spend limited resources, put future generations at risk and in debt, for no return?
Is this a question that markets can answer?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion: if the law is on the books solely because of religious grounds, particularly of the yahweah god-head, then it is at least in spirit against american values. People should absolutely have the right to finish themselves off to avoid suffering. It is such bull$#!+ that because some people believe in some magic man in the sky that that determines what other people can do - it would never be mandating that jack biblethumper, jr will be killed --- plus, isn't one of the defining aspect of judeo-christian values the presence of choice?

Choice is permissible as long as we do not offend the Powers that Be. I favor easing the final passage for anybody who wants to go out that way. It is too early to take a national vote on this topic as far too many people are under the brainwashed sway of their churches. As Church attendance continues to wane, we will eventually reach the point when we can take a national vote on this most important topic.
