he redshirted his first year, has played fall semester, so would he transfer, sit a year then have 3 and a half semesters to play or 2 and a half (5 years to play 4 ). Would he take away one of our two remaining scholarships for 2012 .

Would he take away one of our two remaining scholarships for 2012 . Yes... on scholarship is on scholarship, redshirting is irrelevant.

Well, if decides quickly, then he can transfer in the spring and only have to sit out the first half of the season next year... right?
Classes don't start until Jan. 18, so he has a little wiggle room. Let's hope we're in the running.
An interesting note, he was the only player from CA on the VA roster.

Johnson left due to lack of playing time.
"Tony Bennett said the issues were playing time. If that's it, then it's another example of players not having any patience. The departures hurt the Cavs' depth but it shouldn't stop the momentum. UVa is off to its best start under Bennett at 10-1 and is clearly the third-best team in the ACC so far." - Andy Katz

At 6-9 240 he will get playhing tine. At least bckup power or bckup center.

we only have 2 scholarships remaining for 2012- so does the coaching staff still -think we have chance to sign Pelle and Shepard- Was Johnson highly recruited out of high school, he red shirted last year and has only played minimal minutes this year during preseason when you have some softer teams.

It's looking more and more of lock for UNLV to land Pelle. I'll bet anything he will attend the game on Jan. 14. I hope I'm wrong and he decides to suit up for the Aztecs. I still have my fingers crossed for Shepard, we're in his top 5. I wouldn't be against using the last two scholis to land more front court power. Here's some info on Johnson: HIGH SCHOOL • Averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots a game for head coach Pete Rettinger at Elsinore High School in 2009-10 • Elsinore reached the semifinals of the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Southern Section Division 3 and won the Sunbelt Conference Championship with a 10-0 record • First-team All-State Division 3 by ESPN Rise.com and third-team All-State by Cal Hi Sports in 2009-10 • All-CIF Southern Section Division 3AA first team in 2009-10 • Selected the 2009-10 All-Valley Player of the Year by the North County Times/The Californian • First-team All-Valley selection by the Riverside Press Enterprise and the Co-Most Valuable Player of the Sunbelt Conference in 2009-10 • McDonald’s All-American nominee in 2010 • Selected to compete in the third annual Jack Jones Shootout All-Star Game in Memphis, Tenn., and in the second annual High School Academic All-American Classic at Azusa Pacific University in suburban Los Angeles • Scored 22 points (10 of 11 from the field) and had eight rebounds in his team’s 136-133 victory in the High School Academic All-American Classic • Named to the 2009-10 Best in the West (Coast) first team by the Long Beach Press-Telegram in November of 2009 • Top 100 Recruit by Scout.com and ESPNU • Sat out his junior season in high school after transferring to Morse High School in San Diego, Calif., from Canada • Member of the Alberta Provincial Men’s U-17 team in 2008 and 2007 • Was a reserve and the only freshman on the Alberta Provincial Men's U-17 team that won the Canadian National Men's U-17 Championship in 2007 in Sherebrooke, Quebec • Starter and the only sophomore on the Alberta Provincial Men's U-17 team that finished second in the Canadian National Men's U-17 Championships in 2008 in Charlottestown, Prince Edward Island • Played for head coach Joey Shackelford at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in 2007-08 • Averaged 16 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks a game for Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in 2007-08 and was the team’s Most Valuable Player • Southern Alberta High School Basketball All-Conference first-team selection in 2007-08 and scored 20 points in the Southern Alberta High School Basketball All-Star Game • Averaged 18 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks a game for the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute’s freshmen team in 2006-07 and was the team’s Most Valuable Player

It seems James Johnson has been on Fish's radar for some time: "The 6-foot-9, 234-pound Johnson didn’t play high school basketball his junior year because of eligibility hurdles in San Diego that arose after his family’s move from Canada. Partly because of that, Ted Johnson said that James often talked about the possibility of taking a prep year. However, Johnson’s play on the AAU circuit convinced them both that it wasn’t necessary. Ted Johnson vividly recalled his son taking it to current Ohio State big man Jared Sullinger at the NBA Top 100 Camp two years ago. It was also during that year that Johnson said that his son was so impressive during pick-up games with San Diego State players that Aztecs coach Steve Fisher offered him a scholarship right on the spot." www2.newsadvance.com/sports/2010/....irt--ar-651812/

Why would you pass on him? Great question. If Fisher likes him and already offered him, that is good enough for me.

Why would you pass on him? Because he was asked to redshirt his freshman year and this year he's the 3rd post player off the bench getting less minutes than our Alec Williams. By the time he would be eligible he would be a Junior. There are always a few top ranked post players who dominated in high school but can't keep up with the speed and athleticism of D1 and I feel like this is hwat he has the makings of. However like I said, In Fish I trust and if he decides to transfer here then I obviously defer to coach Fisher's judgement.

Looking through the game logs, Virginia starts two senior bigs, and plays a lot of 3 guard or 4 guard/small forward line up. Another playe that gets some mins is a freshman, but he doesnt get crap either. There isnt a lot of oppertunity for him this year, looks like next year he would get decent playing time.

If that were the case then I don't think he wouldn't be leaving and sacrificing an entire year of eligibility. He's already used his redshirt year, meaning that to leave now would literally waste his sophomore year. I don't understand why he' sleaving now and not at the end of the season. He may not get a whole lot of playing time this year, but at least he could have gotten what he could before transferring rather than wasting the second half of year AND all of next year.

Maybe he doesn't like the east coast like a lot of kids from the west coast. He could be homesick.
