I hate to see Latos go but I always thought the Padres would trade a starting pitcher. Free Agent pitchers love signing with the Padres and decent hitters won't. The only way to get decent hitters is the draft or a trade - free agents won't happen very often because of Petco Park.
Edinson Volquez
Absolute stud early in his career. Had Tommy John surgery. I think the Padres believe that he can come back from that even though it is taking longer. This is part of the trade that is a gamble of sorts. The Padres are very deep in starting pitching and can afford to swing and miss. But the potential upside of this piece is huge. A player who at 24/25 years old can put up a 3.21 (2.43 away from huge hitter friendly park) ERA in 196 innings, can be an Ace again after TJ surgery.
Yasmani Grandal
Stud minor league catcher. Huge pickup in an area the Padres are pretty thin. I have a strange feeling that 10 years from now this will be the piece of this trade that Padres fans think about most. Although that may be Latos if he helps the Reds to the WS, which could happen.
Yonder Alonso
He had decent minor league numbers and only 88 at bats in the majors last year. I hope he does well but I think most folks looking at this trade probably over estimate his worth. Rizzo had way way better minor league numbers at a far younger age. Blanks had far better numbers at about the same age. People are placing a lot of faith in 88 MLB at bats last year.
Brad Boxberger
Could be a valuable piece of a re-worked bullpen. He is 23 and pitched in "AAA" last year. 2 year career in the minors 70 walks 203 Ks in 154 innings. Those peripherals look real good.
