What's his style of hitting? He only hit .243 at home last season. Doesn't provide any power at a power position. Thank you!

When runners are on base he hits well and for power and when the bases are empty he works pitchers for walks. That is exactly what we need. Petco Park also is best suited for line drive hitters and Chase is that. Runners on base.338 .410 .500 .910 When Bases are empty his OBP is .350. Find a player that is better in those stats on the Padres. People get caught up too much in traditional stats. A single is worth much much more with RISP but with the bases empty a walk is worth exactly the same as a single. Measure what is needed. Only one stat does that. It is RE24. It takes the base/out value when the player comes to the plate and compares it to the base/out value when he is done. Headley had a very very good rating of 20.83 last year. The only Padre that was better is Guzman (22.30), if you allowed him to qualify with 271 PA.

It is just a question of how it is valued versus other aspects of the game. Power also includes doubles. My relative rating of doubles versus home runs is higher than most other fans too.

Where do you anticipate the payroll being on Opening Day? I believe you said north of $50MM? Or right at fifty? I'm going to say $45MM, tops. We'll see if Moorad is a man of his word, and it "starts with a five". With arbitration raises, it may get to $50MM, but there will be no fresh talent brought in, I am sure of that. Padres Rumors: Latos, Headley, Bartlett, Hudson By Mike Axisa [December 15 at 11:48am CST] Last week we heard that the Padres aren't shopping right-hander Mat Latos, but today Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reminds us that the team isn't in the position to rule anything out. Here are Rosenthal's rumors out of San Diego...Byrnes is "willing to talk about every player on his roster" and other clubs are inquiring about Latos, but Rosenthal reiterates that the 24-year-old isn't being shopped. Third baseman Chase Headley is the player most in demand and most likely to be traded. The Tigers have interest in him, but the Padres are said to be asking for "the moon." Jason Bartlett and Orlando Hudson are very available, but they're also drawing very little interest. Rosenthal expects the Padres to be active at some point in soon.
www.mlbtraderumors.com Moorad never said anything about talent; he just said the payroll will start with a "5". This is the same Moorad who keeps saying that his ownership group is worth $4 BILLION, so perhaps he should just get the $$ together and complete the purchase from Moores, and get on with whatever the hell he plans on doing with this franchise. Maybe he could take some of the money he will get after he sells his AAA team in Tucson, and put that into the Padres.

I highly doubt they would raise payroll to close to $60M and do so in a way designed to make the team worse. That is just a silly statement from you.

If you are referring to my statement--1) at the time of my response, Moorad had not announced that he was proceeding to complete the purchase from Moores (although it had been discussed), and 2) where do you get this $60 mil figure from?

I said close to $60M. I got a $57 Million figure from here. Although they have backed off that claim. It is currently estimated to $51,555K after arbitration is complete. You are still quibbling and not addressing the main issue. Do you really think they would spend money without the aim of being a better team for doing so?

How could the Padres get worse if they signed better players?
How can you spend more money, "In a way designed to make the team worse?" If you're spending more money on better players without sacrificing anything else that's a net gain, not a loss.
This team maintains the status quo. No, scratch that, any time a player gets any good they trade him. This team does worse than maintaining the status quo.
Is this team even going to contend for a World Series this year? No. Next year? No.
They're taking a dive. That should never, ever be allowed in pro sports. Giving up on a season should be cause for immediate removal of the ownership - just like with McCourt.
The Padres have given up on 2012 as a championship season. They gave up on it last October. They have almost zero hope in 2013. This team is a joke, as is the league itself.
