For now...in no particular order:
Jeff Fisher: A career winner, his teams play with discipline and he seems to get the most out of his players.
Rob Chudzinski: Probably surprising to some, but I like this guy alot. When he as OC of the Cleveland Browns, he was able to score 25 points a game with Derek Anderson as his QB, and a 31 year old Jamal Lewis. He is currently doing a great job with Cam Newton in Carolina, where Ron Rivera took him to be his OC. Spent time on the Chargers staff (two stints) and knows the personnel well, but is not a career Norv assistant. Spent time under Schottenheimer also. Younger guys, seems to have an edge to him and would coach with some balls I think....kind of like Harbaugh. Players like him.
Bill Cowher: Ideal, but no chance if AJ stays, and I think AJ will. Cowher was groomed under Marty in Cleveland, and from what's been reported has little use for AJ Smith.
Rob Ryan: Depending on who he would hire as his OC.

Cowher is an obvious choice - and I do think there is better than a 50/50 chance that A.J. will get canned (ticket sales are already down, and season ticket sales for next year will go into the toilet if he is retained). Gruden could be interesting. The big question is simply this - Would this be the Gruden from Oakland and the first couple of years at Tampa, or the Gruden from his last few years in Tampa when he was run out of town? Jeff Fisher? What, exactly did he win? A few division titles and made one (losing) Super Bowl appearance ten years ago? He'd be better than Norv, but he also seems to be like Marty in that he doesn't win the big game. Rob Ryan? The guy doesn't come across like a legit NFL head coach. He'd have to cut his hair and try to lose at least some weight. (It's kind of hard to tell your players to bust their asses to get in shape if you let yourself get that fat.) Brian Billick? Maybe. The guy was an offensive genius in Minnesota, then became a defensive minded coach in Baltimore. AND he's got San Diego ties as a former SDSU coach. Right now I'm thinking that Cowher is the best choice. A.J. has got to go, and firing him would open the door to bringing Cowher in. After Cowher I might go with Billick, who is also a no-nonsense, take no crap kind of coach. Hell, I might prefer Billick to Cowher. I'd have to be in on the interviews to really know for sure which guy I'd prefer, but I don't think Dean's going to go for the idea of having me sit in... I'm sure there are others, like Chudzinski, who could potentially be good choices, but I just don't know who those others may be.

Erik,
I am always leery of the "can't win the big game" tag. There's a difference between "can't", and "has not".
Bill Cowher got this tag once, and was even losing support in Pittsburgh after a couple of dismal campaigns when he had Kordell and Tommy Maddox at QB.
Dungy was canned in Tampa because he "couldn't win when it mattered". He later won a Super Bowl.
I think Fisher did a good job with the personnel he had. He had alot of very good teams. He didn't necessarily have great ones.
Look at Marty. Did he fumble that punt for Eric Parker vs. NE in the playoffs? Did he fumble for Marlon McCree after the key interception? No. He put his players IN POSITION to win the football game. Players have to execute.
What also helped coaches like Cowher and Dungy win the big one....a great quarterback. If you don't, you better have a pretty good one, a little luck, and a once a decade type defense like the 85 Bears or 2002 Ravens.

I do not want a conservative play caller on offense or defense. WE need a head coach that is comfortable with giving his coordinators complete power over the play calling, so that he can coach the team. Marty's problem was he would get too conservative when the pressure was on, and he'd start policing the play calls instead of trusting in his coordinators. We do not want another Marty.
Norv was a hired buffoon who Masqueraded around the league as an "offensive genius" for years. I guess That cowboys team that had all that talent on offense had nothing to do with it; perhaps one of the best offensive lines in the history of the game. just saying. WE do not want another buffoon running the team.
Now, comes the hard part... WE know through trial and error what we do not want as a head coach. there are so many unknowns when you hire an employee, so whoever does the hiring has to perform due diligence... Now, I'm not sure we can trust AJ any longer after many of the choices he has made as GM of the Chargers. I think the only way this team can start over is to get rid of him, and hire some new flesh for the old ceremony. Aj was a dark cloud.
I'm excited! I see brighter days for the chargers.

(Super Bowl winner and fairly tough disciplinarian...) I still think his background is offense. In Baltimore, Ozzie Newsome assembled terrific defensive talent (Lewis, Boulware, Woodson, McCreary, etc.) and Marvin Lewis was in charge of the defense. I like him okay.

Jeff Fisher or Bill Cowher for me.
I want someone with fire, and a defensive background. As for APEric's reference to Fisher and "what has he won" sentiment? A lot more than Norv or Marty as HC's for sure. I wouldn't compare him to Marty as Fisher won much more, with much less, and went further than Marty in the playoffs.
Fisher's defense with our offense could be something to see in my opinion.
No to Billick, in my opinion, that SB season had more to do with Ozzie Newsome's astute drafting and intelligent FA signings then anything else.

No to Fisher. Cowher at the top of the list for me.
