Really? And Buckley wasn't "smug"? Seriously dumb statement. =Bob Buckley smug? No. Supercilious, perhaps. What's important about Buckley is that he was willing to challenge the self-satisfied and intellectually dishonest orthodoxy that permeated the academy in mid-20th Century. Equally important, he was more than up to the task. AzWm

AzWm Well, he was rather pompous and liked to use Latin phrases and I suppose he was an intellectual. But tell me something - how would he be perceived by a Republican Party that's now controlled by the Tea Baggers who hate intellectuals or, for that matter, would never vote for Reagan if they knew he would raise taxes 11 times during his 8 years in office? Goldwater became a pariah in his last years because he began to question his party's stance on several issues. If Reagan were to run now and not rule out tax increases, would he be accepted? Given the number of times he raised taxes, how would he be perceived if he'd been the President since 2008? The same goes for Buckley. Given the anti-intellectual strain that runs through the Republican Party these days (and please don't insult my intelligence by claiming it doesn't exist), how would Buckley be seen, given his Ivy League education and his way with words? The Republican Party is well on its way to becoming a regional, read Southern, party. There is a rather total hatred of the Northeast "elites" who once led the party and as such, they are marginalizing themselves. They engage in every election in the manner Faulkner described politics in Mississippi and it will seriously damage them. And that's a problem because we need two national parties. =Bob

"...Tea Baggers..."?
Your fascination with homosexual activities makes me seriously wonder about you.
Are you a "Tea Bagee"?

Republicans and democrats jesus like choosing between cockroaches and sewer rats. Remebr Gore(you fag) Vidal calling Buckley a facist,I was hoping for a death match.
