I would add that he has the additional distraction of having to defend or fire some of the terrible choices he has made for his legitimate staff and his shadow government czars. This distraction does not help Obama, but it just might be what brings down the entire misguided Obama agenda. Beck and Rush one by one picking off those poor staffing choices will be hard to combat.

Interesting article. I'd mention that it was an 'old' Democrat, JFK, who famously said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." And an even 'older' Democrat, Grover Cleveland, said: “I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution and I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit." But those days are long gone. The current Democrat in the White House wants to know what you can do to serve HIM. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL9sOZUf1NQ

President John F. Kennedy August 1, 1963 United States Naval Academy ******************************************************************* Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we will pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of Liberty. John F. Kennedy, January 21, 1961, inaugural remarks ****************************************************************** "In short, it is a paradoxical truth that ... the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now. The experience of a number of European countries and Japan have borne this out. This country's own experience with tax reduction in 1954 has borne this out. And the reason is that only full employment can balance the budget, and tax reduction can pave the way to that employment. The purpose of cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus." – John F. Kennedy, Nov. 20, 1962, news conference ********** "By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia', the 'security' of the nation, and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms', our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason, I believe the Second Amendment will always be important." -- Senator John F. Kennedy, 1960 But, sadly, those days are long gone too. His party has been hijacked by what are basically communists.

His party has been hijacked by what are basically communists. Communists? I do not prefer that appellation. A more appropriate name, in my mind, is collectivist. . . or perhaps statist. With a healthy dose of authoritarianism thrown in for good measure. The whole idea behind the founding of this country was the realization that the state, when it has too much power (which is almost all the time), will use that power more and more to limit the freedom of the average citizen. It matters not which political party is in power. The struggle will always be to check the almost automatic desire of those in office (especially at the federal level) to assume greater and greater power over the lives and financial dealings of the citizenry. For about the last three quarters of a century now one party (the Democrats) have tried increasingly to consolidate more and more power in the hands of the federal government. I am never quite sure whether those who champion that trend (the MoveOn and Huffington Post ilk) sincerely believe that such a policy is in the best interests of the country or openly desire power for its own sake. Regardless of which is true, the trend which I have mentioned is clearly sinister. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance*. Skepticism regarding the motives and policies of anyone who tries to convince the public that greater power accruing to government is in their own best interest is part of that vigilance. Don't worry, we'll take care of you. You are not on your own; we know what's best. That, sadly, is what the Left is trying to sell the American public. It's the grand bargain that all tyrants offer; Give us the power and you will be better off. Just don't ask too many questions! With respect to Barack Obama, does anyone else remember his words during the campaign regarding the role of government? He said, and this is pretty close to a verbatim quote: "How big the government isn't important. What matters is how effective the government is." Well! By that measure, a government could take 80% of the wealth and income from its citizens, and just as long as that money were spent wisely such a policy would not be objectionable. What nonsense! The basic problem is twofold: First, why should anyone believe that those in power have any greater wisdom than the average citizen? and Second, who seriously doubts that power, once grabbed by the government, is seldom relinquished, and never willingly? But that is, quite apparently, pretty much what the President believes. Here's a link to a piece that clearly illustrates Obama's guiding philosophy. www.nysun.com/opinion/obamas-big-government-vision/71365/AzWm *The origin of this quote is in dispute. en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Leonard_H._Courtney

Well, we can quibble about the technical differences between "communist", "collectivist", "socialist", "nazi", "fascist", "progressive", and "communitarian", but the bottom line is they are all ultimately totalitarian.
And that defines the modern Democratic Party.

I'd rather he explain the Taliban hi-jacking.
If anything the GOP has become Democrat lite.
However, if there are severed heads in the RNC HQ, and girls having acid thrown in their faces by GOP operatives, I'd like to hear about it.
On the other hand, the Democrats do have outed communist Van Jones and, as William points out in the Freidman thread, people who think authoritarian elitist rule is a good thing.

The Friedman piece is really disturbing largely because he is obviously a well-educated, good man with very positive personal values, yet he seems to ignore the obvious problems which are virtually certain to surface when the government . . . any goverment! . . . gets too much power.
And it does not matter which party is in power, either.
