Meh. I like Hoyer but I wouldn't fault him for getting the f x x x out of san diego I understand that, but in San Diego I assume he has a certain amount of control on decisions. In Chicago, even if Epstein was the President in title, I would assume he would be running the baseball operations. Would Hoyer want to be his lieutenant again, when he has his own show now?

I don't think these young baseball execs have as much ego as their older predecessors. I feel like they would like to chill with their friends and cruise the waiver wire while shotgunning a beer. I think Hoyer would want to go.

Agree with everything said in this thread so far. It's impossible to judge any GM here with the ridiculous budget restraints they face. It made me laugh when Mooresad said he'd let his employees interview for promotions but not "lateral" moves. Going from any position with the Padres to that same position with almost any other club is a promotion. So long Jed and thanks for trying. Welcome Josh Byrnes, whoever you are. Byrnes: Former Arizona GM, was GM when they went to NLCS in 2007. Former Epstein assistant in Boston, and current Padres assistant.

Let's just say it's going to take a miracle to keep either one of them at this point. Pads are a rinky dink organization with no aspirations of winning any championship in the near term.

Wish we had never gotten rid of Kevin Towers. He and Billy Beane are GM's that have an eye for talent, at a cheap price. SD is on a tight budget...as usual.

He is signed by San Diego through 2013 with a 2014 club option. We should get at least as much compensation as the Red Sox do. The Cubs can not have him without our permission. That needs to be bought.

another guy leaving San Diego for his "Dream Job".
"dream job" is starting to become a bad word around these parts.

Jack McKeon is available.
Or, how about pulling Jerry coleman out of the broadcast booth again.
You can work and supplement your Social security, up to something like $1,400 per month. Either one of these guys would work.

Either one of these guys would work. We have a guy who has been a GM and has been with the Padres this past year. Padres will promote from within.

That needs to be bought. Any compensation is expected to be minor. Byrnes was Moorad's guy in Arizona, and word is Moorad prefers him here in San Diego. What sucks is we're also losing McLeod, who is very well respected for his scouting and development IQ.

The reason for Hoyer's decision to go to Chicago for what seems to be less power on the surface hasn't been explained yet, but he gets a team with a bigger payroll and chance to reunite with Epstein. Jason McLeod, a Padres scouting guru, will reportedly go with Hoyer to Chicago -- though the Padres retain a strong staff with John Abbamondi, Fred Uhlman Jr. and Randy Smith among the holdovers. Padres owner Jeff Moorad has happily accepted Byrnes as his new GM, no surprise since Byrnes is the one who got a contract through 2015 from Moorad in Arizona after he took them to the NLCS in 2007Read more: sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/jon_heyman/10/21/gm.search.jed.hoyer/index.html#ixzz1bRPKcwJB

hopefully our drafting doesn't take a hit. That catcher Hedges looks like an interesting prospect. Please tell me Byrnes' admin won't be of the Alderson/Gayton 'safe pick' variety.
other than that, i don't really care if hoyer leaves. realistically, what will change? we'll still have no money for free agency, so we'll buy low on spare parts and hope it works out like always.

We're never going to get a World Series Championship in San Diego. This is a cheap, small time organization. Yeah, the last two drafts were better, but with Hoyer gone who knows if that will continue.
Our owner doesn't have enough money to run the organization effectively (he should never have been allowed to buy the team as he is cash poor by ownership standards), and this whole, "Do it on the cheap," mentality will never win a WS.
I found that whole Moneyball movie concept to be a fraud, too. What did the A's win, exactly, to make it such a success story? They became competitive? Big whoop! Talk to me when you win a title. But that was the template that the Padres used, and to a degree are still using. It doesn't work. You have to get damned lucky on a couple key guys and get superstar quality players at bargain prices. (Of course, you lose them when their contract is up because you can no longer afford them...)
Anyway, losing Hoyer is probably a bad thing, but in the end it won't make a difference until ownership opens the purse strings and gets the Pads to at least the middle of the pack in salary.
