Baseball America does a great job of rating prospects in the minors. They are in the process of rating the top 20 prospects in each minor league. They have done all the Padres minor leagues except "AA" and "AAA". Minors Ratings Below are the results (fair share is average number per team). League | Teams | Pads Top 10 | Fair Share Top 10 | Fair Share top 20 | Pads Top 20 | Top Padre | Player | Arizona League | 13 | 2 | 0.77 | 1.54 | 3 | #1 | Yoan Alcantara | Northwest League | 8 | 3 | 1.25 | 2.50 | 6 | #2 | Cory Spangenberg | Midwest League | 16 | 2 | 0.63 | 1.25 | 3 | #5 | Rymer Liriano | California League | 10 | 1 | 1.00 | 2.00 | 2 | #2 | Jedd Gyorko | Texas League | 8 | 4 | 1.25 | 2.5 | 5 | #7 | Casey Kelley | Total | N/A | 12 | 4.9 | 9.8 | 19 | N/A | N/A |
The Padres have 12 players in the top 10s when 4.9 would be average. The Padres have 19 players in the top 20s when 9.8 would be average. So the Padres have more than double the top prospects that an average team would have.

The Padres have 8 players in the top 10s when 3.64 would be average. The Padres have 14 players in the top 20s when 7.29 would be average. So the Padres have double the top prospects that an average team would have. That is without San Antonio ranked. They won 100 games and sent the most players to the "AA" all-star game. So that should inflate those numbers even more. Also note that the padres top prospects are all well above average. 1, 2, 2, 5.

I have updated the post with the Texas League Top 20 which was just released. The Padres team had 4 top 10 prospects and one more in the next 10.
Note: Their top 20 prospects lists are not merely lists of the best players in the leagues. It is a list of the players who they think are the best major league prospects - hence the name.

Does it matter if the Pads have great prospects? They won't keep them for more than 2 or 3 years once they hit the majors and have any success. The constant replacing of key starters is what has killed the Padres ever since the World Series. No continuity. No core to build around.
The idea is that you bring up these top prospects to put around a solid core of players that can carry a team - and then the top prospects develop and help a team become a World Series team. But you have to keep the core players to build around. The Padres haven't done that since the late 90's.

I've been a life long Padre fan and am getting fed up with it.

A team "controls" a player for 6 season in the big leagues. We have only traded players after 5 of those 6 years. We have never traded players after 2 or 3 years because of budget. The key is getting more of those 5 year players to trade. We have had very few. The more you have the better you stock your minors with studs that continue the process.

By the time that a player becomes a legitimate starter and major contributor you only get 2-3 years out of them. 4 if you're lucky. The Padres have had ZERO continuity. They have not kept their core players. The roster has been a revolving door for over a decade. This organization sucks. They will NEVER win a World Series. They try to do everything on the cheap. To win a World Series on the cheap requires not only a lot of good decision making, but a hell of a lot of luck. What do the Pads have that would make a former fan like me excited to go to a game? We all knew how 2011 would turn out. 2010 was a fluke (and it ended the way that people expected the whole season to go). This team is a mess. And we're changing gears yet again. What they need to do is get the payroll up to the middle of the pack. Immediately. Of course, if they had been willing to do that we could have kept Adrian (he wanted to stay initially) and had something to build around. Now we don't. We've got bupkis. I won't spend my hard earned money on this team until they spend their money to build a LEGIT contender.

It's why I said in the other thread that we need some type of salary cap for both minimun spending and maximum spending. That way we could afford to kept the AGon's, Peavy's, etc and not try to settle for the Hawpe's of the world.

I believe that is the reason why Moorad does NOT want a salary cap--there would be a salary floor, and he really doesn't want to be in that position.
