Does anyone know where UNLV is at on the progress of getting their new stadium built? This would be great for UNLV and have an indirect positive impact on the MWC.

Don't know. But they need to build that thing post-haste to give the Rebs a pulse.

For general info: UNLVNow.comLatest from the Sun: www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/sep/13/developers-unlv-stadium-could-be-built-without-rai/Like everything else these days, including a new stadium in San Diego, there is a lot more talk than action with the poor economy and governments not flush with funds. Everyone struggles to see who is going to risk the capital to get such a project financed. This one looks good on paper but when even Steve Wynn is crying cut, cut, cut it's kind of hard to do.

Hope this gets done, Vegas has a lot of incentive to build it since they get championships of pretty much any extreme sport. Boxing, UFC, bull riding, moto x, monster trucks, the list can go on and on. More seats means more money.

And one with a retractable roof. According to Rebel Roberta, the roof idea is apparently dead. Too expensive apparently. There was never any discussion of a retractable roof, which is even more expensive. I don't think a roof is necessary if they build a stadium which is fully enclosed to mitigate the problem with the wind in LV. The additional comfort would help attendance. So would having a stadium on or adjacent to campus rather than to hell and gone like Sam Boyd. As an aside, I have no problem with UNLV despite how awful their football program now is. They have been a great rival in basketball and LV is a great place to hold the conference tournament and will be even better if, as planned, LV builds an arena to house an NBA team so the Rebels wouldn't be playing on their home court. So I see UNLV along with Fresno, UNR, Hawaii and Boise, assuming they aren't invited to the Big 12, to be the core of our rivalries going forward. UNM? Unless the Lobos hire somebody of the stature of Mike Leach or Rich Rodriguez (as opposed to Gary Barnett, who I can see them hiring instead), I'm very pessimistic about their football program. That Rocky Long quit on them was bad enough but then they made maybe the worst hire ever in Mike Locksley and there's zero talk of building a new stadium or even renovating University Stadium like they did with The Pit. Plus UNM is pretty far east and UNM is almost a mile high. So UNM is more akin to the front range schools than to the rest of us.
