I just picked up the Sporting News College Basketball Preview magazine. Sporting News predicts we will be 3rd in the conference.
In terms of ratings they give us the following:
Best under pressure - Chase Tapley Best Coach - Steve Fisher Best Home Court Advantage - SDSU (Yup...not the Pit! Way to go "The Show")
Did those of you that survived the Trenkle years ever imagine that we would some day be thought of as the school with the Best Home Court Advantage? Wow. I know there were at least 4 or 5 of you on this board that made up the entire crowd with me back then.

Not only the Trenkle years, but after we lost in 3OT at home to Air Force(!) in 2000, I knew there was nowhere to go but up from there. Two years later we were dancing.

I enjoyed going to the Sportsarena to watch them play, though.

I remember yelling across the Sports Arena (from the cheap seats too) at Smokey to put in Berry Randle and laughing as Randle looked up and nodded in recognition he heard me. The crowd was so quiet and small there you actually had to be careful what you yelled because everyone in the place could hear you. Yogi Hogi!!
The atmosphere at Viejas last season far exceeded anything I thought I'd ever see for SDSU hoops. And then to see that in Arizona and Anaheim for the NCAAs was even more incredible. The Show gets a lot of credit for that.

That place should have been preserved as a San Diego historical landmark.

DJ shut that crowd up in the pit last year when he dropped a 3 on them to end the first half and another to start the second half. What a SHOW he put on!

If we broke 2,000, I considered a good crowd. Now I expect to draw 5,000+ more on 11/11/11 vs. Bryant than they get for UNC/MSU that same night.

There was another season tix holder sitting a couple of rows behind me at the SA who had a megaphone for a voice. In the midst of those ghost crowds he would yell, "There ya go! WAC refs are the worst in the country!" Where are you Moose Stoobing?

I got season tx when Brandenburg came here to retire...er I mean coach. Loved the long drive to the Sports Arena, how expensive the parking was and how we were so bad sometimes that we were good. Loved watching Brady Trenkle drop a 3 from way downtown (out of 4 shots usually) and then get torched 3 times in a row on defense.

Brady and gang would dive for loose balls with a minute to go in the game when down by 20. If only their talent matched their attitude.

I remember yelling across the Sports Arena (from the cheap seats too) at Smokey to put in Berry Randle and laughing as Randle looked up and nodded in recognition he heard me. Except that you were yelling at Tony Fuller, not Smokey. Randle wore the red-and-black from '93 to '96. Smoke was coach from '79 to about '86. And, yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. I've been to a number of games with 300 of my closest friends. One could yell all sorts of crazy stuff and it would just echo through the arena.

Moose may have been the worst official ever, but he was consistently bad. There was no favoritism. I remember the time he approached Coach Trenkle and said, "Quit whining Fred. It doesn't help." Hang in there, Matt There ya go! WAC refs are the worst in the country!" Where are you Moose Stoobing?

longtimebooster, your memory is much better than mine. It must have been Fuller. Thanks for the correction.
It's amazing to see the program go from Marty Dow and Mitch McMullen in the paint back in the day to M. Thomas, B. White, K. Leonard, et. al more recently. While it was exciting to see McMullen's team give North Carolina a run for their money, it was much more exciting to see the Aztecs on par with any team in the country last season. Don't know that I ever expected to be able to say that.
Like many, I'm eager to see what the future holds and if we can continue to build on our recent success. A year like last season makes being a 16-year season ticket holder all worth it.
