wonder if UNLV and UNM have put as much in their football as they have in their basketball programs. Maybe time to let them join another conference.

UNLV has been putting great effort into building an on-campus stadium. UNM, OTOH, poured a ton of money into renovating The Pit and fattening up Alford's contract. The rationale was that the NCAA told UNM that without the renovation there would be no more tournaments there and without mas dinero, Alford would leave. I can understand but can't see putting 100% effort into basketball while basically ignoring THE cash sport, football. That said, I'm going to wait and see on UNM. They have at least finally fired that clown Locksley and if they replace him with somebody of Alford's caliber, we can be assured they will be fine. Of course, if they hire on the cheap and bring in a defensive coordinator from the MAC it will show that football just doesn't matter at UNM.

I don't think they have the dinero to hire someone like Leach, either. He won't come cheap despite being out of a job and wanting to return to coaching. They still have to deal with Locksley's buyout. If UNM doesn't have a sugar daddy then they better make sure they hire a diamond in the rough. They can't afford not to.

The consensus among Lobos and MWC football followers is that Leach is within financial reach. They believe that because he still has pending litigation w/ TTU and ESPN/Craig James. Part of his litigation is based on slander, libel and defamation. The claim is that it has caused him financial burden. It would be in his best interest, litigation wise, to take a job that underpays him to prove his case.

Wow, and I thought Chuck's coordinators were bad!! Sounds like Hauck will have to shake up his staff. Hauck has a lot more fire in him than Chuck ever had so I don't think Hauck's the problem. There's a danger of losing his team if he doesn't make the changes. If he loses the players, he'll be toast too.

I have to say that UNLV's loss to Southern Utah has really shocked me. Maybe it's as much the score as anything. If this had happened last year, the first season with Hauck, I could have discounted it quite a bit. But to happen in the second year of the new coach's tenure is really bad. Even Chuck Long's Aztec team of '07 was an improvement over his first year.
UNLV must do something fast or they will be a permanent doormat. I suppose the reason I am so shocked is that I have thought that, long term, Vegas had more potential to create a competitive team than does UNM. I had also thought that Bobby Hauck was probably the best coach they could have gotten to perform a turn-around. I hope I was not wrong.
As for UNM, I think it will never get better than when Rocky was there, and it may well not come close even to that in the future.
Two very troubled programs. Add to that resource strapped Wyoming and CSU and you have the reason the MWC will never get as much respect as we would like.

I'm not going to bother to try to look it up but I'll bet that at least from a scoring standpoint, that is the worst half of football an FBS school has ever played against an FCS school. I didn't watch any of the second half but you have to wonder whether some of the players didn't quit on Hauck.

A desperate situation. AzWm
