Surprised to hear it too. He did help Stoops & Oklahoma rid themselves of Chuck Long, so from their end of the deal he's a genius.

He is currently under contract with the MW and CUSA to develop a coast to coast football merger. (USA TODAY print addition)

He is currently under contract with the MW and CUSA to develop a coast to coast football merger. (USA TODAY print addition) All kidding aside- The fact that he's done so much side work with the MWC and SDSU has utilized his services (not to mention we employed his son), I see this as a huge positive. If he gets the Big12 commissioner position, we now have a friend in a very high position. SDSU to Big 12!!!

Only as someone who's familiar with us, nothing more. We're currently not even a blip on the other conferences' radar screens, primarily due to geography. Forget the snooty Pac-12. There's a remote possibility things will change the way this season is unfolding. If we end up ranked at the end of the year, that would surely draw some consideration. That'll suddenly shed a different light on the geography. IMO the amount of buzz the team creates is the key.

Chuck Neinas was not only commish of the big 8, he was a founding big wig of the CFA which morphed into the Bowl Alliance, which became the BCS. He drafted a memo in the very early 80s outlining the formula for super conferences and the breakaway. He is well respected, he also is very responsible for the situation college football finds itself in - I do not feel comfortable with him again running a major conference.

God help them. Chuck Long will be their spokesman. He recommended Jimbo Fisher which was a fantastic recommendation...I don't even think Chuck Long was on his hire list. That was Schemmel's doing 100%.

He is currently under contract with the MW and CUSA to develop a coast to coast football merger. (USA TODAY print addition) From what I had read, he was hired by CUSA and even stated that he was not retained by any other conference. That might be what you meant, but I can't see anything where he is under contract with the MW

That was Schemmel's doing 100%. This is true. Jimbo was the Neinas recommendation, and they also interviewed Rocky, and the job went to, Chuck Long. What he did do, was recommend Bohn (sp?) for AD and also placed him at Boulder (where I believe he lives) 18 months or so later

Surprised to hear it too. He did help Stoops & Oklahoma rid themselves of Chuck Long, so from their end of the deal he's a genius. I don't think that's at all accurate. As md said, SDSU hired Neinas to vet candidates and make a recommendation to replace Tom Craft. That's exactly what he did and he recommended Jimbo Fisher. Despite that recommendation Schemmel hired Chuck, who he had worked with previously when Schemmel as assistant AD at KSU while Chuck was on the staff there. As I've said before but bears repeating, considering that Rocky Long also wanted the job, it was undoubtedly one of the worst hires ever. However, that was completely on that clown Schemmel and considering that it's now hurting SDSU's chances of potentially being wanted by the Big 12 if it expands, it's a gift that just keeps on giving.

Well if you move up the food chain who was the idiot who hired Schemmel, considering his limited background with athletics? I think Neinas became persona non grata when he hitched Bohn to Colorado so we can't blame him.

I think Neinas became persona non grata when he hitched Bohn to Colorado so we can't blame him. If you're saying that Neinas was involved with the hiring of Schemmel, I think that's correct. However, word I heard was that Bob Stull of UTEP, who was one of Neinas' clients, told SDSU through his people that he was interested in the job if he could report directly to Weber. The answer given Stull was no and he then never publicly applied. The result was that besides Rick Bay's immediate subordinate whose name I can't recall, the pickings were very, very slim. Bottom line is Neinas shouldn't be blamed for Schemmel, Weber probably should. (Not even sure about Weber since I've heard scuttlebutt that the dictate for SDSU's AD to report to Weber only through Sally Roush came from the chancellor himself after all the problems with Tom Craft and Rick Bay.)

Jesus, everyone should be glad all that drama in the Ivory Tower is now behind us. I'm hoping Hirshman knows how to set up a good organization, top to bottom.
