With the word that Harang will not buy out his contract, the chances of him coming back in 2012 increase significantly. I wonder who the starting pitchers will be in 2012.
1. Latos - bad 2nd year when looking at his first but really coming on lately.
2. Luebke - Great rookie year.
3. Stauffer - had his ERA under 3 in late July. I think he is fading a bit due to never having so many innings.
4. Harang - Very good year.
5. Moseley - Padres have control for 3 more years. He had a very good year before getting injured.
6. Richard - Big lefty has had over 300 innings for the Padres with an ERA under 4.00.
7. Bass - has looked very good this year but hasn't pitched enough to know. He should get another couple of starts this year. He is only 23.
8. LeBlanc - just turned 27 and not near the level of the other pitchers listed. He seems destined to be a spot starter moving from "AAA" to the majors a few more times before options forces the Padres to trade him.
I suspect that one or more of these pitchers will be traded to a team that has a surplus of young outfielders. In any case it will be an interesting off-season.

I've always felt, and in fact said in other threads, that Harang wouldn't buy out his option due to the effects of Petco. But, I've been reading where the Pads might buy it out now. It will be interesting to watch. Of those starters mentioned above, who would you trade for? If it were me looking for a pitcher from the Padres I would focus on Latos, Luebke and maybe, just maybe, Stauffer. My reasoning for that is all the other pitchers mentioned above have been hurt or injured in one fashion or another this season. Stauffer is, as I believe you say, fatigued. If I'm the Pads brain trust, I am not trading Latos, Luebke nor Stauffer. What do you think we can get for any of the other injured pitchers that will be of value? Maybe Richards brings us something but I think not, as he's coming off of shoulder surgery to his pitching arm. And, I would like to see us keep him if he's healthy.

If they buy his contract out it will be so they can offer him arbitration and get draft picks. The problem with that is if he accepts Arbitration. He would likely get a bigger contract than the current one. That only happens if an under the table agreement occurs where he would not accept arbitration. Otherwise if the Padres get nothing, I think they will keep him. He is cheap in 2012: $5 million contract minus the $0.5 million buyout means the Padres would only have to pay $4.5 million more to keep him than to not keep him. That is cheap and well worth the price.
I could see Richard or Moseley traded. I tend to agree that I wouldn't want to see L,L, or S traded. But like all trades, it depends upon what you get in return. Bass may get a lot of interest too, especially if he does well in the next couple of starts. But we would need a similar player in return - a young gifted outfielder for instance. Remember we got Maybin last year for pitching.

Remember we got Maybin last year for pitching. No question. One of my favorite trades by the Pads. I like Maybin a lot and was excited that we could finally let TGJR go. We did get Maybin with excess stock from the bullpen, though. I don't think we have excess stock in the rotation right now, and won't know until training camp next year to discern whether most are healthy enough or not.

Wrongo- Your second sentence is what the subject is about and it's a question. Besides, you are only referring to the starting PITCHERS and not the starting lineup.

No. It is a subject line. It is a statement about what the post is about. Wrongo- Your second sentence is what the subject is about and it's a question. Besides, you are only referring to the starting PITCHERS and not the starting lineup. Bruce, I know you like to find things to ding me for. (hint: that last sentence ended in a prepisition). (Second Hint: I misspelled Preposition). But those were a little bit of a stretch. "Starters" - generally refers to starting pitchers. "Lineup" - generally refers to the starting 8.
