The Panthers have not had much luck playing Mira Mesa recently, but all that changed Friday night. After scoreless first quarter the Panthers took charge and, admittedly helped by some Marauders miscues, closed out the first half leading 16 to 0.
In the second half Vista dominated. The final score was 35-7. What was supposed to be a close contest turned out to be nothing of the sort. How good Vista is may be determined when the Panthers host Mission Viejo in a few weeks.

William, Did you go to the game? Is Vista really returning to their old form? I watched Mira Mesa in a controlled scrum against Valley Center and Escondido Charter. They have some big kids and lots of depth, but VC pushed them around pretty good most of the time on both sides of the ball. This is supposed to be a down year for VC because they lost so much to graduation. How did Vista look besides the score. Did they control the line of scrimmage?

This is supposed to be a down year for VC because they lost so much to graduation. How did Vista look besides the score. Did they control the line of scrimmage? I have attended every Vista football game for the last 8 plus seasons! I guess you did not read my announcement regarding HiTekRadio's ( www.hitekradio.com ) starting its ninth straight year of presenting live webcasts of Panther football. I do these webcasts with my son Erik, who is a 1986 Vista grad. (The webcast is archived on our site.) Vista looked pretty good, I think. The Black Shirt defense (as they like to call it) was very strong. Mira Mesa scored only once, and that was on a 39 yard pass; it was their first play after blocking a Vista punt in the second half. On the other hand, Vista capitalized with a TD after a Marauder fumble inside the Mira Mesa 5 yard line in the second quarter. That came shortly after Vista had scored the game's first TD. Then the MM QB was penalized in the end zone for intentional grounding, which counts as a safety. (I don't think I half ever seen that situation in over 55 years of watching football!). Larry East missed one FG attempt early but did make two others for Vista. And Jordan Alexander again showed lots of flash as a speedy, hard to corner running back. Next week Vista faces Fallbrook, a team that lost 38-7 to Murrieta Valley. AzWm

Yes, we do the games. He's the, "Host," and I'm the talent. Think of AztecWilliam as Jerry Coleman. I'm more Lee Hamilton than Ted Leitner, but you get the idea... (Hey, almost everybody loves Jerry.) More on topic, Vista DID look very good. They got a monkey off their collective back (they hadn't beaten Mira Mesa since 1991), and now the goal is Qualcomm in December. That's going to be a tough goal to meet because there are a heck of a lot of tough teams that they'll have to go through to get to Qualcomm, but they're off to a good start.

AzWm I live in Mission Viejo and will keep you posted of their progress. They won 55-0 Fri. against Morningside, not sure how good they are. MV is pretty balanced though, as usual, but I say go VISTA!!!!!

It has been a while. Keep us informed on how the D1 talent is doing. Are those Samoan kids as advertised? I will visit here from time to time if VC is better than I had thought. they did push Mira Mesa around, but a controlled scrimmage and there gam against doormant San Pasqaual are not much of an indication. One of the VC underclassmen has an offer on the way already. I think the Jags have problems with numbers of kids out and a real green QB.
