for years I've been saying that the only thing that kept Castillo in the starting lineup was his contract, and the pride of Aj Smith. Its obvious to me that he is NOT an elite player. I hear a lot of people defending him, saying that he gets double teamed quite a bit. well, guess what, we run a 3-4 dfense, the fact that the teams were double teaming Castillo just shows you how bad our DLine has been over the last few years. once the opposition realized that Liuget is the stud that he is, they would have stopped double teaming Castillo and started to go after Liuget.
the injury of Castillo will allow the emergence of a far superior athlete in Vaughn Martin. with two ends in the class of Martin and Liuget we have on of the best lines in the 3-4 game. I'm now looking forward to watching the chargers for the first time in a long time.

It seems like Castillo gets injured every year. I'm not sure Vaughn Martin is "far superior" but I do feel he can get the job done.

D-line has three very good yound d-linemen that Chargers have drafted in the last three years: Liguet, Martin and Cam Thomas. However, their experience is rookie, 3rd yr and 2nd yr in league. Being a D-lineman in a 3-4 involves a lot more than a 4-3. Castillo's cap number for next two years is around $2 million. Not bad AT ALL for an experience d-lineman.
Antonio Garay is a STUD of Pro-Bowl caliber that Chargers found and as an unrestricted FA and had the foresight to be patient for a year prior to signing him to a two year deal before his breakout season last season.
Put that together and you may just have to give AJ credit for stocking a d-line that should very strong for next 3-5 years.
