This issue came up about five years ago, because I remember reading an article about a pardon for Billy (at least) that many years ago.

Pat Garrett was my great grandmother's uncle. She shared his last name before getting married. According to my grandfather, the Garrett family actually viewed him as an outcast and, while he was a sheriff, they all thought he was not a very good person.

I suspect that there were many people in the Old West, some well known, who were "not very good" persons. That might include a few lawmen who vacillated from one side of the law to the other, depending on which territory they were operating in at the moment. AzWm
