Rymer Liriano, is one of the young stud foreign players the Padres signed a few years. He is from the Dominican Republic and turned 20 in June. 6'0" 210 pound righthanded right fielder. In 400 At Bats at Fort Wayne .328 .390 .508 .897 41 walks with 400 ABs and he has 59 stolen bases. It is very nice to have a player that draws walks and steals a lot of bases. He has power too. 25 Doubles, 7 Triples, and 11 home runs. He is a 5 tool player. Great arm and defense. Here is an article about him from June. He has just got better since then. Last night for instance he had a double, a single, a walk, and two stolen bases. Getting himself to second base 3 times paid off with 3 runs scored and a Tincaps win.

Let's also state that he is repeating the level after being completely overwhelmed at Lake Elsinore.

Let's also state that he is repeating the level after being completely overwhelmed at Lake Elsinore. He only had 55 at bats at LE. Hard to judge from that. But let's note that he did that at 19 years old. That is 2.5 years below league average. He just turned 20 which is below the average age of low class "A", which he is dominating. Playing at "A+" at 19, and at "A-" at 18, as you noted, is a testament to the Padres feelings about young Rymer. He should play at Lake Elsinore at 21 and be in "AA" by 22. That is very young. He is 10 months younger than Donavan Tate. Folks who love Donavan's potential should be drooling over Rymer.

Donavan's potential would probably be easier to salivate over if he could stay on the field, as he is out for the season yet again. Liriano needs to cut down on his strikeouts at the higher levels.

Rymer has an OBP of .325 in at bats that end in a walk or strikeout. That is not bad. He could cut down on strikeouts but it would reduce his walk rate and most probably his power numbers. I am happy where he is. Note: W/K Ratio correlates higher to OBP and BA than either W/PA or K/PA. It follows that W/K ratio is the metric we should be interested in and not so much on the number of strikeouts. W/K ratio also projects better than most stats as a player moves from level to level. And for a player who has stolen 60 bases, walks are more valuable. So the ratio between the value of a walk and the disvalue of a strikeout is higher for Rymer. Therefore he shouldn't worry too much about Ks. July and August.362 .407 .562 .969 K-Rate = 16.2% His K-Rate before July was 25.6%. That is a young player improving. If he grew up in Texas with his speed, strength, and arm, he would probably be one of the top dual threat QBs in college.

I am stoked to see this kid develop. He was young, young, young when he played at LE, and still is young. I think this kid could come on quickly, now. The other good thing about his BB rate is normally the mantra for the Dominican kids is "you don't walk off the island, you hit." Means he's learning to understand the K zone.

OBP on PA that ended in a Walk or Strikeout (OBWKP). .283 Pre All-Star Game .361 Post All-Star Game
The ratio between Walks and Strikeouts correlates to BA and OBP better than either the rate of walks or the inverse strikeout rate. That is a very important point when looking at a batter's statistics. Many "too many strikeouts" observations should be changed to "he is a patient hitter who works pitchers for walks". That quality, which is very positive especially for a base stealer, will often result in more strikeouts. Rymer's post all-star .361 OBWKP indicates he is a batter who, is patient and works pitchers for walks

No. Let's monitor his status into Elsinore, or San Antonio if he proves able to make the jump.

No. Let's monitor his status into Elsinore, or San Antonio if he proves able to make the jump. Since 1980 only 2 Midwest Prospects of the Year haven't eventually reached the majors and 75% make their MLB Debut within 2 years (that is 2013 for Rymer) of the award. Two notable players who took 3 years are Adrian Gonzalez (AGon) and Carlos Gonzales (CarGo). Both fell off badly enough to be traded. CarGo, Ari-Oak-Col. AGon, Tex-SD
In looking up the data I noticed that Willie Wilson had 211 Stolen bases in his minor league career and was caught stealing NEVER. That is an amazing stat.
Rymer will move way up the Padres prospect list. Maybe their new #1 prospect. More Probably #2 behind teammate Sampson.

I, as a padres fan, have been burned by too many 'can't miss' prospects to invest much time into caring about this kid.
Khalil Greene Ben Davis Matt Antonelli Tankersly Ruben Rivera Etc.
