Interesting! We often mistake some sort of prejudice for common sense.

I won't bother with most of that other than this:
The Chinese minority in Malaysia has long been more successful and more prosperous than the Malay majority, just as the Indians in Fiji have long been more successful and more prosperous than the indigenous Fijians.
The Overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia are often called "the Jews of Asia". They are money lenders and shop owners and they are often hated. During the "troubles" in Indonesia after the attempted "coup" in '65, Bali went on a killing spree and the majority of those killed were overseas Chinese.
By the same token, the overseas Chinese were blamed for the Malaysian uprising during the '50s - which they were. The outcome of that was the overseas Chinese gained control of Singapore while mostly getting out of Malaysia.
This is my problem with you, Will - you read one commentary and because the writer states something you like, you agree with it and offer it on here. It's a simple fact - you really know nothing about SEA and you really need to do some homework before you offer this sort of nonsense.

I do know, however, that Sowell is on the right track when he says that individual effort or lack thereof is pretty much what separates successful people from unsuccessful ones, regardless of race. As for my contention that individual effort is more important to a person that race, that is not intuition. It's observable fact. And it's true whether one is speaking of Chinese in Southeast Asia or Vietnamese in Garden Grove California or Iraqis in New York City. AzWm

AzWm What in the Hell I'm talking about is that it's neither race or culture, it's elite access. Singapore isn't exactly an egalitarian paradise but people do have the opportunity to get rich. The same isn't true in Malaysia. What Sowell seems to be offering is an argument that it is about sub-cultures but ya know what - rereading what he wrote, he really doesn't say much of anything at all. =Bob

Culture is the major factor in success given and equal opportunity.ghetto culture and redneck culture and Chicano Barrio culture all are all counter productive to material success. WEalth is a mind of legacy of culture as is poverty.

According to Stanford University it is all about IQ. Smarter people succeed and low IQ people fail. They have reams of material to substantiate their position.

I know it happened more than four times.
