As of March, 2012, the Los Angeles Chargers. Thank you, Paul Taglia-boo. If the Spanoses have decided that staying in San Diego will never yield the kind of money they want, one would have to conclude that they probably see the LA City Council's decision as a definite green light. As for the possibility of a new stadium here, I just can't see it. There is money aplenty up there, and basically none here. If I were Dean Spanos, I would long ago have decided either to leave or to just put up with the Q. Who would bet even a nickel that he has picked the latter? AzWm

There is a third option for the Sspanosess. First is to move, second is to swallow their pride and stay in a stadium they hate. The thrid is to sell the team. And make a tidy profit, I would think.
If they choose the third option, I would think that the chances of the Chargers staying may not be more thaln 50/50.

William, do you really think staying at Qualcomm is something the Spanoses would consider doing? Seems pretty clear to me they're watching the situation in L.A. and hoping they can use it as leverage against San Diego to get a new stadium built near Petco Park.
That's what I would be doing if I were them. Of course, I would also realize that turning over the ownership of an NFL franchise is a guaranteed vast money maker so I would content myself with that and not expect the city council to say "Thank you sir, may I have another?"

As an Angeleno, I for the Chargers staying in SD. Bring back the Rams or lets go expansion.

Do I think that the Spanoses want to stay in the Q? No, I do not. They will either get a new stadium or move. Or, and I forgot to add this option, build a stadium with their own money. That last one seems the least likely of all; had it been a serious possibility, they would have built it already.
So, where are we? Am I correct in saying that there is no serious possibility that the City will cough up a few hundred million dollars to help build a new stadium? With the ticket-guarantee fiasco not forgotten, and with the City broke, where would the money come from?
How long will the Chargers wait for the City to act? My guess is that they have long since given up on getting a new stadium here and are just waiting for the right time to make the big announcement. That will mean either a lame duck season here or one season played at the Rose Bowl or the Coliseum.
Or, if the LA folks prefer another team to sign up with them, the Spanoses might well put the team up for sale.

Wake me up when shovel meets dirt Agree. OK, so even if construction was started tomorrow it would be a five year project. By then, who'll care? This time there could be "hundreds of millions of dollars in transfer fees", (I assume, the "Davis rule". That alone could be a deal killer for Spanos). And I dunno, but reading Farmer's article about the Rhaydas selecting Pryor in the 3rd round of the supplemental, it kinda had a local feel to it as if the City of Angels still has some Rhayda blood. Point is, even if/when this stadium actually gets built, (we'll see), I won't assume the Chargers will have the inside track to be "selected" to move to LA. Reading the article, it appears a lotta $#!+'s still gotta happen in LA for this to happen. The Charger brain trust should continue to focus on the San Diego area, IMHO.

As an Angeleno in LA a couple of weeks ago, I had the sports page of the Times with the front page picture of Sam Bradford working out. For a split fart second, my Rams were in LA and all was right with the world! Whatever team ultimately ends up in LA, I personally would like to see the City of Angels switch gears and give this new team a new name with an LA identity. Especially if it's the Chargers.

Again, assuming it actually gets past the planning and negotiation stages and assuming it's, say, the Chargers this team will be dead man walking for the five years it takes to build the stadium. Wanna go to games at the Coliseum or the Rose Bowl for five years? Maybe Dodger stadium? I figure by then, the good people of SD will have moved on. After all, this is San Diego we're talking about.
