I'd take Ed Reed or Polamalu over Weddle any day. No doubt there's a few more like Landry in Washington too

The dude dominated SDSU when he was at Utah though. He was a man among boys. Sure he did but there's virtually no correlation between playing safety at Utah and safety in the NFL. Is he as good as Rodney Harrison was? Or Polomalu? Or Bob Sanders when he's healthy? The fact is the Chargers haven't had a hard hitting safety since Rodney. That's been a hole in our D for years. Weddle is a smart player who isn't bad. He's just not the best.... but he's pulling down some serious coin. THIS. He's a damn good player. And important to the team, very much so. I wouldn't say he is a top 3 safety in the NFL though. That's just my $.02.

Weddle update; After 4 games, Weddle is having a Pro Bowl calibre year, 29 tackles in 4 games. Interception vs. KC late in the 4th quarter saved the win for the Chargers, also had a big interception vs. Miami to help seal that win.

He's nowhere near Reed or Polamalu. You're nuts if you think he is.

Probably the team's MVP to this point of the season, which backs up everything I have typed thus far on this subject. "Nowhere near Reed or Polamalu" is a debatable statement which implies that Weddle is an average safety, while the fact is all three players are top notch NFL safeties. Weddle's game fits very well with the Charger's Defensive schemes, which is why the usually frugal AJ Smith took out the checkbook and paid the man. Would you prefer the Chargers brought in James Butler or Johnathon Amaya?

I do still believe that the word "fact" in your statement that Weddle is a top notch safety is truly debatable at this point in his career. He may get there but I don't see it yet. One thing he doesn't provide is the fear of the WRs going over the middle. They don't fear him as they fear the other two along with Landry

He didn't do much yesterday. Got jocked by McGahee on 1 run. Ran over once. Dropped INT but that happens.

I've never been a Polamalu guy, but I'm a big fan of Ed Reed. Weddle just isn't the big threat in run support that Reed is, but still had a hell of a year.

Ryan, Polamalu is a beast. He makes plays, he tackles very well. There's not much not to like. He is GREAT.
Weddle had a very solid season, and I feel he certainly earned his dough.
Good for him.

He makes plays, yep. But he is mediocre in coverage, a lot like Rodney used to be. Makes big plays, after the receivers catch passes downfield. Weddle earned his check this year, we just need someone to compliment him on the other side.

Polamalu gets interceptions, pass deflections, you see in games where he is all over the place. Look, I'm a Browns and Chargers fan. I hate Pittsburgh. But #43 is a special player. You're flat out wrong here.

We can agree to disagree on this one, it's okay.

Spanos and Moores-just brothers from another mother Well, Spanos spends money on his roster. Legit money. He may not spend it wisely, but he isn't a penny pincher when it comes to player salaries.
