If you can read this and not think that the West is in for some very bad times, you must be one heck of an optimist.
And - - - surprise, surprise! - - - I am not going to blame Obama for all this. I do think he is almost uniquely incapable of understanding how precarious our position is in this critical part of the world. Furthermore, his pre-conceived notions, which I think are slightly anti-American (how else do you explain his bad-mouthing his own country abroad?), prevent him from seeing things clearly. Still, Obama is not causing these events to occur; the forces driving them have been working for centuries.
If the scenario De Borchgrave is painting goes all the way, what things would ensue? How about a radicalized Egypt starting a war against Israel, or perhaps Israel attacking first as they see an Egyptian invasion is imminent. Well, those who remember the other wars over there might have a clue as to what that would do to the economies of the West.
Here's an even more ghastly possibility. What if, this time, the forces against Israel are actually up to taking on the IDF? Do you not think that at some point the Israelis are going to decide that their only chance to survive is to go nuclear? Just what would our economy look like with the utter chaos and destruction that move would cause?
Further worry, touched upon only lightly here: Turkey. Long an ally, Turkey seems poised to go radical Muslim. Imagine that nation joining the other radicalized Muslim countries? I shudder to think.
Anyway, read this and then tell me why I'm just silly to worry about so much.
