His point is well-taken, but I can't help but think of the Afghans who will be slaughtered if the Tali-ban takes over again. "This time no more Mr. Niceguy" is likely to be their motto. And they are the guys to back up the claim.

However much Afghanistan may be a huge mistake for the US, it is equally true that there will be a price to be paid if we fail. The Afghans will pay the price in the short run, but we are likely also to pay a price in the long run.
