I hope the significance of the grave marker for Montana's Mike Mansfield is recognized by everyone. While Ambassador Mansfield earned entry into Arlington because of his service as a Senator and Ambassador, he did not earn it as a member of the USMC. He earned it while he served in the Navy during WWI. His tombstone reads; "Michael J. Mansfield, Pfc. U.S. Marine Corps" It should have read; "Michael J. Mansfield, Seaman 1st Class, USN, WWI"

So why would you say such a ridiculous thing?

So why would you say such a ridiculous thing? After doing research for Ted Kennedy, I admit my mistake. Mansfield qualified for Arlington based upon his time in either military service and his election to national office. However, he only served in WWI while in the Navy. I still believe that his wartime service in the Navy takes precedence. USN - Feb 1918 - Nov 1919 USA - Nov 1919 - Nov 1920 USMC - Nov 1920 - Nov 1922 From 1927 until 1942 he was a student and then a college professor. In 1942 he was elected to the House of Representatives and later to the U.S. Senate. He was Ambassador to Japan from 1977 until 1988.
