Homecoming was almost a nasty Halloween fright show for the Panthers as they fell behind a surprisingly tough San Pasqual High team tonight in Dick Haines Stadium. But after falling behind 0-14, the Panthers got going and eventually won the game, 42-28. However, the game was still dead even in the fourth quarter until Vista finally went ahead, 35-28. After that, San Pasqual was held on downs and the Panthers added a final TD to cinch the victory.
No doubt coach Dan Williams will have many things to discuss with his team. As certain politicians like to say, mistakes were made. But the #1 ranked Panthers pulled out the win, and that is the main thing. And, lest anyone belittle the now 2-6 Eagles, a close look at their record indicates that San Pasqual is a lot better than a typical two win team has any right to be. They definitely have some players who can run the ball. Ultimately, though, with players such as Stefan McClure, Shakeel Marshall, Joey McFadden, and Alex Kelly (Colorado commit), the Panthers are hard to beat in the long run.
Next week it's off to Mission Hills, coached by Chris Hauser. Hauser was head man at Vista before moving over to the new school in San Marcos.

Yeah, Vista came out flat again (they did last week against Escondido, too - although they came out firing in the second half), and that put them in a bad position.
San Pasqual is better than their record indicates. They lost by 1 point in their games against Mission Hills and Rancho Bernardo. They could have just as easily come into last nights game with a 4-3 record. Their T formation running attack is hard to defend, especially with all the shifting that they do. Their offensive line is pretty athletic, too, as they are good at pulling and leading the runners down the field.
Still, Vista played a great 4th quarter. It took them a while, but they finally played like they were capable of playing.
I think they needed a game like the one they had last night to get focused again. Some of their games have been too easy, and I think they got overconfident.
We'll see how the rest of the season goes. Vista certainly has the capability and talent to win it all, but they're not so overwhelming that they're any kind of lock to even make it to the Q.

When Valley Center played San Pasqual, they were very tough. Not all that surprised that they would present a problem.

Wow, I can't believe Vista lost tonight. I can. Unfortunately. It was an evenly fought game, but Vista was the team with the two key turnovers and they committed more penalties. That was the difference in the game. As we were doing our pre-game show I noted that Vista couldn't afford to turn the ball over more than once, and that they had to cut down on the penalties that we've seen from them all season otherwise Mission Hills would win. Well, Shakeel Marshall had a 40+ yard run in the 2nd half that was a SURE touchdown - except that he pulled a Bobby Duckworth and had the ball slip out of his hands (he wasn't touched by anyone) at the Mission Hills 11 yard line, and one of the Grizzlies trying to catch him fell on the ball. Mission Hills was energized by the crazy turnover and marched 89 yards for a TD in about 6 plays. Stefan McClure - usually very sure handed - fumbled the ball on a punt return at Vista's 11 yard line leading to the winning field goal. It was a case of trying too hard to get a couple extra yards (he had 3 Grizzlies tackling him, but he was still fighting for extra yardage). (Edit - According to the NC Times this was actually Shakeel Marshall's 2nd fumble - not Stefan McClure first. I would have sworn it was McClure as he was back on all the punt returns I saw last night. He did get a leg cramp or a pulled muscle near the end, and I saw him go back to return that punt - but maybe he came out at the last second and was replaced by Marshall.) Mission Hills, on the other hand, didn't turn the ball over at all. A couple holding penalties put Vista into long down and distance situations that led to two punts in the 2nd half. And that was the difference in the game. Mission Hills didn't commit big penalties and they didn't turn over the ball. Vista did. There was a horribly blown call that should have gone against Mission Hills for pass interference (you can't tackle the receiver until the ball gets there - and Stefan McClure got tackled on an attempted 40 yard pass play long before the ball got there), but the refs didn't make the call. I thought we were watching WAC or MWC refs. But that alone didn't make the difference in the game (that was the first half, and the first half still ended with Vista leading 21-14). It was a great game - one of the best and most competitive this year. It just didn't turn out the way we had hoped it would. I hated to see Chris Hauser get the win over Vista. There are still a lot of people in Vista who aren't happy with him quitting the VHS head coaching job to go to Mission Hills. This could be a good thing for Vista in the long run as the players may have gotten overconfident and cocky. Not anymore. We'll see once they get into the playoffs.

[So Mission Hills was that good and deseved to win Erik? Well, they were that good last night. They played a great game and never got down emotionally. There was no let up from that team. Did they deserve to win? I don't know. Did the Raiders deserve to win in their game against the Chargers? Or did they have the game handed to them thanks to Chargers mistakes? Mission Hills probably deserved to win this game a little more than the Raiders deserved to win that one. It's just a shame that mistakes like that were the difference - but that's football! I hope so. In 1984 Vista went into the Q with a perfect record and a really cocky attitude. They lost. In 1985 Vista went into the Q remembering the year before, and they played hard from start to finish and won the State Title. In 1986 Vista went into the Q with a perfect record and a really cocky attitude against a team that they CRUSHED during the regular season. They lost. Most of the guys on the team weren't on the varsity squad from '84 to remember that lesson, and because they didn't learn from the program's recent history they repeated it. They have to get focused now and keep that focus throughout the playoffs if they're going to have any chance to win the D1 Championship.

According to the North County Times, Marshall was bumped slightly by a ref as he approached the Grizzlies 10 yard line, causing him to fumble. I didn't notice that, but I'd have to see a replay to be sure.
Mission Hills played really well. Despite their good performance (and relatively mistake-free play), this is a game that Vista could well have won. But, had the Panthers won, we would now be talking about how they were fortunate to have escaped with a W against a very strong team.
In terms of the tone of the game, one can use this word; OFFENSE. Offense, offense, offense. Vista gained 433 yards, Mission Hills 367. This was no defensive struggle. Lots of big plays, including a 67 yard QB sneak for a TD by Mission Hills!
Vista is a very strong team, but one that has made too many mistakes this year. They will have to do something about that if they want to go far in the playoffs.

www.nctimes.com/sports/high-school/nct/football/article_ed2467ec-9ee4-554a-ba92-3e0cb598b316.html?mode=storyVista got back on track Friday night. Well, sort of. They won 35-10 against RBV, but they turned the ball over 4 times and committed at least 12 penalties. They can't keep making mistakes like that and expect to go far in the playoffs. Still, it was the Gallardi and McClure show Friday night, and that was fun to watch. McClure really is a special player. (And Gallardi's no slouch, either. He reminds me of Ryan Lindley - he might be a good fit at SDSU...)

Final score - Vista - 37 Fallbrook - 3 It was over by the end of the first quarter. Vista put in their backup QB, WR's, and RB's on the last drive of the first half. Halftime score? 34-3. The second half was competitive as Vista had their backups in at the skill positions (and some defensive spots) in the 3rd quarter, and had their backups in at every position by the 4th (including several 3rd stringers). Vista's starters looked sharp - very sharp. The level of competition they'll be playing in two weeks will be much higher, though, so they're going to have to adjust quickly to win in the playoffs. Here's a pic of Shakeel Marshall. He had 8 carries for 143 yards (including TD runs of 56, 11, and 43 yards), and one reception for 80 yards and a TD (7 yard on the reception, and about 73 yards after the catch). By the way, Alex Kelley (center), who had verbally committed to Colorado is now reviewing his options. Everything depends on who Colorado hires, and if they still want him. He is willing to talk to other programs now. Coach Hoke? Get on it... (Kelley had one play last night where the run went for 5 yards, but he had blocked/pushed his guy 10 yards downfield and then pushed him to the ground to finish off the play - nothing dirty or unsportsmanlike, just superior strength and technique.)

Vista ends the season as Division 1 Champions! 33-21 over Mira Mesa. 12-1 for the season!!! It was a great year for Panther football, and there were so many great players who put the team before themselves - it's no wonder they won it all. Stefan McClure, Christian Gallardi, Shakeel Marshall, Joey McFadden (the beast), Myron Seabrook, Alex Kelley, Brandon Taele, Jeremiah Kose, Marley Arce - the list of major contributors is huge. It was a great group of guys, and they were a lot of fun to watch week in and week out. And what about Coach Dan Williams and his great staff??? Those guys made great halftime adjustments when they had to, and when they didn't have to it was because they came in with near flawless game plans. They helped guide that great group of kids to the Championship. It's nights like this that really make me proud to be a Vista Panther. PANTHER FOR LIFE, BABY!!!

All from the last 36 years (Vista has 1/4 of the top division San Diego CIF titles during that span, and they also have two State Championships - 1974 & 1985). It's a great day to be a Panther! ;D
