Mira Mesa will scrimmage Valley Center this Friday. Might be a chance to see who has what. VC thinks they will not miss a beat from last year.

VC thinks they will not miss a beat from last year. I can't see that happening. I just can't see them being as good as last year. I know VC has a good O-lineman. Orange Glen will actually compete with them this year. I know OG has a better qb than VC. OG also has a very good HB-LB. Both are being looked at by Div I teams.

Do they have the same running back as last year? He was pretty good.

VC's line will help determine how good their QB is.

How is that a good schedule? Mira Mesa is ok, Uni sucks, Great Oak I have no clue on, Oceanside is great, El Camino sucks, Escondido won't be very good this year, San Pasqual sucks, Mission Hills is alright, RBV is decent at best and Fallbrook sucks. Vista should only lose 1-2 games max. That's why they play the game - you never know how good or bad a HS team will be. Vista lost a lot of key guys on both sides of the ball (Larry East, Troy Ware, Ofisa Kose, etc). They may still be a top team, or they may not. It depends on how good this year's juniors are. And don't count Escondido out just because they lost their RB tandem. They've been good for several years and have a good coach. El Camino has been close to being good for a few years - they remind me of Vista 3 years ago when they were still rebuilding the program. This should be a very interesting season. Where did Ofisa Kose end up at?

Vista - 21 Mira Mesa - 14
It was a somewhat sloppy game by Vista as they had their annual first month of the season turnovers and penalties. They overcame them to dominate the 2nd half, and if not for a Mira Mesa 2nd half 67 yard pass and run (30 or so pass, 37 or so run) to a receiver who had split the defenders this game wouldn't have been close. That was most of their offense in the 2nd half.
Vista looked good, but still has some work to do. Coach Williams had mixed feelings - he was clearly bothered by that blown coverage on the 67 yard pass play.
Vista's Stefan McClure looked fantastic - again, as did Joey McFadden (a strong, bruising FB that can run well) and Jeremiah Kose. (Who knew that Kose could run and catch the ball as well as he did tonight?)

Erik, tell us more about the center who is being recruited by some big teams. He was featured on PPR tonight. Ahhh - the unheralded heroes of the team. The linemen. Alex Kelly. One hell of a lineman. Big, strong, durable - the Aztecs should have him on their radar big time. They need to get an offer in to him now. His dad is a minister/pastor (and a really nice guy). I suspect that Alex is a very good kid, but I haven't talked to him as of yet. I should do that after the next home game. But he's a big time lineman. Vista's line looks a little bigger and stronger this year - and he's the anchor. The Vista QB (Christian Gallardi) is taking the snaps mostly under center this year - which says a lot about how confident the coaches are in their O Line. (They took more than half the snaps in the shotgun over the last couple of years.)

Does this Alex Kelly have good burst speed? That is the reason why so many Samoans are in the NFL. That first step is tremendous, like a Rocky Marciano right hook.

It's really hard to focus on the center when you're calling play by play - you're trying to watch 22 guys while focusing on 3 or 4 of them. The center isn't usually one of the guys you focus on as a play develops.
However, as your intrepid reporter scouting possible recruits I will endeavor to pay closer attention to the center of that Panther offensive line in two weeks. (The Panthers have a bye next week - lousy scheduling. They'll probably need that bye later on, unfortunately...)

I can tell you this Alex Kelly is not Samoan but white. I never said that he was Samoan. I asked about burst speed. But now that you mention it, about one in every three Samoans has an English or Germanic last name. I don't remember ever seeing an Irish last name on a Samoan body frame, but it would be reasonable to think that there could be at least one. I remember the skipper of the Manua Tele (converted ocean tug boat used for inter island travel in the Samoan Islands.) in the Early 1950's was Peter Reed. Some of his grandsons have played football here in the US. MY stepmother Talila Thompson was the Volike of the eastern Samoan (Manuan) Islands (Volike --> Spoiled one --> The one who carried the royal title to her eldest son, who is my step brother Lewis.) Thompson was an English Sea Captain's last name, but the family was strongly Samoan in appearance. Lewis was a DE on the Escondido High team that won the 1969 CIF championship. He was proud of the fact that he broke four opposing player's legs that season. Samoans play a very tough game of football. You win more often that way.

Well, then, thank you Tom. I doubted that he was with an Irish name, but now I know for certain. It was nice of you to take the time to let me know. People with names like Tuiasosopo and Maatele and Autele and Leitulegaasenoa are also usually not Irish. For your benefit, the Polynesians are classified as "many people" They are not Black, Asian or White, but somewhere in between. Samoans throw off a lot of blond haired blue eyed children when they breed with people of northern European descent. That is because many of the Polynesians carry recessive genes for blond hair and blue eyes. I noticed today that Arizona had a blond haired Samoan playing for them. It did not appear to be died or bleached.

I am surprised that Vista had that much trouble with Mira Mesa. I was told that Mira Mesa might have been over rated based on how they got pushed around in their scrimmage with VC.
