Oh so close to yet another CIF Championship last year - if not for a dislocated kneecap to Stefan McClure on the third play of the game they may have won that one.
This year?? They'll be a tough, competitive team yet again. Will they be able to fill the shoes of their departed seniors? Well, coach Dan Williams is always an optimist on that count - he always believes in the younger guys coming up.
I know I'll be objectively calling the games on the internet from the pressbox. (Well, as objectively as possible. For me being objective about Vista Football is a tough task, indeed!)

Mira Mesa is ok, Uni sucks, Great Oak I have no clue on, Oceanside is great, El Camino sucks, Escondido won't be very good this year, San Pasqual sucks, Mission Hills is alright, RBV is decent at best and Fallbrook sucks. Vista should only lose 1-2 games max.

Vista lost a lot of key guys on both sides of the ball (Larry East, Troy Ware, Ofisa Kose, etc). They may still be a top team, or they may not. It depends on how good this year's juniors are. And don't count Escondido out just because they lost their RB tandem. They've been good for several years and have a good coach. El Camino has been close to being good for a few years - they remind me of Vista 3 years ago when they were still rebuilding the program. This should be a very interesting season.

I think Vista will be good this year and like I said only lose 1-2 games during the regular season. Escondido is not going to be anything special this year. They will be right around 5-5 and 6-4 at best. El Camino, that program has just been a cluster f#ck for years. They just can't seem to put it all together over there lately.

Coach Texler took the 2005 El Cajon Valley High Braves to the championship game on Jack Murphy Field. Sort of a miracle. So I'm looking forward to the 2010 edition of the EHS Cougars. www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/may/24/escondido-hires-texler-head-football-coach/

I wonder if Texler keeps any of the old offense, or if he spreads them out and tosses it all over the park as he did at ECV? Where did Gomes end up going?

Where did Gomes end up going? Orange County some where. I think he went to Santa Margarita as the D cord.

Damn, Vista's not playing any OC Powerhouse schools this season?
I thought Mission Viejo was going to be a rival?

Damn, Vista's not playing any OC Powerhouse schools this season? I thought Mission Viejo was going to be a rival? Me, too. One of Vista's most exciting wins was against Mission Viejo about 3 years ago. Vista trailed at half, but came back and pounded MV in the 2nd half, the nail in the coffin being back to back to back sacks by Brad Woodward. That was a fun game. I thought it was a good series. I don't know who pulled the plug, but you never know what will happen down the line.

Oceanside and Mira Mesa are worthy non-league opponents. It's hard to say why there are no games against schools outside S.D. County, but Mission Viejo may have decided to schedule somebody else instead of Vista.
Or, just perhaps, it was decided not to stray too far from home for other reasons.
As for El Camino, the Wildcats have not been the same since Herb Meyer retired. That guy, a genuine "old school" character, could really coach. Reminds me of Woody Hayes at Ohio State or Bo Schembechler at Michigan.

Great rivalry games, Vista and San Marcos in the 70's.

I attended a football camp put on by Natrone Means when I was in high school and Meyer was one of the coaches and it was an experience. We ran a play until it was ran correctly. Jeremiah Kose get his first offer from New Mexico St. I think he'll have alot more before the end of the season I think Ofisa was the better of the two - but they're both really good players. Ofisa was a great run stuffer, a MLB/ILB type. I hope Hoke gives Jeremiah a serious look (along with Stefan McClure who I would LOVE to see stay home to play for the Aztecs).

Ofisa is a better run stoper, but I think Jeremiah is a better LB who can play ILB and bounce outside if needed. I hear Vista's D-line is gonna be real nice with Joseph Mcfadden in the middle. I'm looking forward to watching Jeremiah and Stefan play on the 17th of this month in the Aiga foundation "Legends of the Pacific Weekend" 7 on 7 Tounament here in LA. and Joseph in the Big Man Challenge.

The coach who succeeded Myer at El Camino is now an assistant at Fallbrook High, or at least was as of last year.
Hard to say why El Camino has struggled the past decade. The Wildcats were undefeated in 1999 and haven't come close to that since. I do think that H.S. football programs get better or worse faster than at the college level. Fallbrook won the Div I championship in 2000, beating Carlsbad 50-12. The Warriors made it to the final game in 2002, but have not done much since. (H.C. Joe Silvey may have them headed in the right direction, however.)

There are always guys who dream of being the next great running back. Now the path is open to them to go to Escondido where there are still a few good linemen. If the line is there, you want to go to that school so you can show the world that the headlines should be all about YOU. I will probably go up and check out Escondido in their first game, just like I used to do twenty years ago. Remember, some of the greatest running backs in high school can be littl' guys. Escondido had one, Danny Hustead, half a century ago who was only Five Feet Seven, but he averaged over 11 yards a carry over three years of playing Varsity Football. They gave the ball to him almost all of the time. Why not? It was an instant first down.

Do you really think Mira Mesa needs to be playing Vista.

Mira Mesa has had some of the best QB/WR tandems in the county over the last 10 years, and they've beaten Vista 2 or 3 times in the recent series. Mira Mesa has been a winning playoff team for a long time, and while they struggled some over the last couple of years they've got a good program.
